You need to wet sand the hood with 400 grit - clean it with a solvent degreaser, possibly spray a sealer and then apply an acrylic enamel paint - automotive type. go to the local automotive paint shop and they can help you along. I've seen guys do it with rattle cans too -

Are late model hoods basecoat clearcoat or acrylic enamel?
Is it doable to mask decals and spray or will it chip around the decals?
A colour change can get pricey with new decals...
Any ideas?

Hood Painting
Removing decals is not easy. My son and I just did his SRX. The problem with not removing them is that if you are changing the base color, the existing decal often times will still have a perimeter and fade of the original color. My sons 01SRX was blue with stock decals but nearly every decal had a blue fad in it. In order to make a clean break and paint it black, we removed all he decals.

vmax3, how did you strip the decals? Did you try a heat gun and peel them?

i would say a heat gun will make it easier to get the decals off

I rattle canned mine. 400 grit wet sand, then lots of light layers of gloss black, and then a few layers of gloss. This is the third year without a repaint and it still looks pretty good. Not saying it couldnt use a new layer or two but it has no cracks, peeling off, or flaking off. Total cost was under $20. If I were to do it again I might give the KRYLON FUSION paint a try, it is supposed to bond very well with plastic. I am probably going to paint my sport quads plastics with it this summer for something different.
