whats the difference from the skid on the 96 xt and the 97> xtc and sxr, etc. was it just shock length? I know they used tube w arm on the 96, but where there any things that made this ride super smooth? dad had one and is convinced he has never ridden anything as smooth. has an 02 vmax and an 05 vector, says neither are close. he never touched the settings on the 96, but I think the valving and springs just happened to be perfect for him. short guy of like 140#s I think. any thoughts??

It's all in the set up, that 05 Vector suspension should be way better. Just have to get it set to his likings. The 96 XT suspension was the first attemp yami made at long travel skids and from my understanding was the least impressive skid that they made for long travel. They have only gotten better since introduction, the shocks on the 96 were probably just valved and set properly for his weight and that's why it was such a good ride.
Ah, but trails were smoother back then

TTT, someone HAS to know! HELP!!!
I have a 2000, 2001 and 2003 and all of those are the same. Sxr, Sxr and Rx1.
Back in the Sx and vmax short travel the arms were placed in the same positions, shocks are shorter and that looks like about it.
Setup is the Key! You could get two identical sleds from Yamaha and they ride different. One might be a little softer and smoother ride, the other could have been just a little tighter and you feel all the bumps.
I recommend playing around with it a little. More you play, the more you will understand how it works.
When I first got my Rx1 it was set tight. After working with it, now it rides smooth.

Given proper setup for rider and conditions . . .
The 97 XTC skid should ride better than the 96 XT, and the 05 Vector should be way better than both of the others.
Yes, parts and overall travel is different between the 96 and 97, but the overall design is the same. They are both ProAction Plus skids.
The ProActive on the 05 Vector is a completely different skid, and can be setup to handle most conditions really well.
My opinion is that the newer sleds were likely not setup for him and his riding style.
If he is after the smoothest ride in the stutters to medium sized bumps, and isn't into pounding the rough stuff he should look at a Mono skid.

does yamaha have optional lower rate springs for the proactive (torsion bar setup) that he could use on the vector? price?
