Why would my drive belt explode on my 2000 SRX?

Hello everyone,
I took my 2000 SRX with 1,100 miles on it out this weekend. The sled has been sitting for a long time. Most recently sine December outside with a cover on it. I got it out on the lake and I was cranking at about 80 MPH, when the belt just blew apart. It broke almost into a million little pieces. Why would that happen? Any ideas? I put a new belt on it, and it seems to be fine, but I didn't do any WOT lake runs with the new belt on. Any ideas? Could the belt just have been old and not able to withstand the power of the SRX?

Thanks,
Zack

ZACK, FIRST THING YOU HAVE TO DO WHEN THIS HAPPENS IS CHECK CLUTCH CENTER TO CENTER DISTANCE AND YOUR OFFSET. VERY INPORTANT FOR BELT LIFE TO MAKE SHURE THIS IS IN SPEC. ANOTHER THING ONLY USE THE 8DN YAMAHA BELT. NO AFTER MARKET STUFF !! 3:16 (tony)

Yup^^^ i agree

The belt that blew apart was a Gates X-Treme belt. I have no clue how long that belt was on the sled, as I am the second owner of the sled. What is the advantage to the Yamaha belt?

Thanks,
Zack

THE 8DN YAMAHA BELT IS VERY VERY HARD COMPOUND AND DESIGNED FOR LONG LIFE AND LONG HARD RUNS. SOUNDS LIKE THE BELT YOU HAD ON THAT SLED WAS JUNK. NOW, DON,T JUST PASS THIS OFF AS THE BELT, YOU MIGHT STILL NEED TO CHECK THINGS. BLOWING BELTS IS BAD. CRANK SHAFTS DON,T LIKE IT !! 3:16 (tony)

Do you think that I did any damage to the sled by blowing the belt? I did shut the engine off right away. It seems to be ok?

Thank you,
Zack

THIS IS NOT TO SCARE YA, BUT ONE BLOW,IN BELT IS ENOUGH MORE ME. ONCE THAT HAPPENS, THERE IS A PROCEDIRE THAT HAS TO BE DONE STARTING WITH CHECKING CLUTCH ALIGNMENT. SOME EVEN CHECK CRANKSHAFT RUN-OUT AFTER THIS HAPPENS. YA SEE BELT EXPLODEING IS LIKE A GRENADE. CREATES ALOT OF HAVOC. NOW YOU MIGHT BE FINE, BUT GET THINGS CHECKED OUT!! 3:16 (tony)

Maybe that belt was "dried out" and "brittle" because of the long storage? I've seen a real "porous" 8DN belt...

Yep I think your belt was just dried out. Never thought it would happen but on these 700's or any sled for that matter making over 100 hp you need to replace the belt every year, or take off the one and store in a circle and in a dry place. I blew two belts within a 100 miles. The first one had 1400 miles on it and was new last year, the second one had abour 200 miles on it but it was OLD and was sitting in the belt holder for 2-3 years. Bought a new belt and bam worked perfect. One thing I noticed that before it goes it makes a strange vibration that can be felt right in your azz. If you notice this its because the belt is brittle and where it was kinked its not a perfect oval anymore.
