Lunched a rod bearing this weekend. Center hole.
9200 miles.
Also found the exhaust manifold to pipe donut seal mostly gone ,and 3 to 1 manifold has 4 cracks where the 3 come together.
How extensive can the damage be when this happens??
will all the metal flying around in the crankcase typically mess up the other bearings ??
Is it cost effective to repair with this sled????
How would YOU proceed??

probally more cost effective to buy a used crank, then repair as needed, the yamaha bearings are over a $100 each and then labor to press the crank. I guess it all boils down to how much you like the sled, vipers are not real high up on the selling list with the apex lines out. Its all your decision.

I feel your pain. I melted down my viper a few weeks ago @ 10,160 miles and my brother did as well on the same trip @9,640.

what is meant by "pressing the crank"?... How many bearings on the tripple lower end?.. just asking because I don't ever want to rebuild but I guess it's got to be done some day..
thanks..

every bearing other then the 2 end units are only changeable by pressing apart the crankshaft, and then it must be all repressed together, phased and welded. there 6 main bearings and 3 rod bearings

thanks for the info...
what would this repair cost???
@9200 miles the sled is probably only worth $2000 in running cond.
Should I parts it out and call it a day?
I bought this sled new and really like it, but......

Well 9-10,000 miles on a 2 stroke is alot better than many of the brand X sleds.
yep, it was a great run....she really don't owe me a thing!!!

Well like I said, I think it would be more cost effective to just buy a used crankshaft($300 range), then throw in some new pistons/rings gaskets, it could be fixed for a decent amount then( I would say you could rebuild it for under $8-900). It all depends on what you want to do with it, keep it as a spare sled, sell it and dont do anyhting, or part it out. I would almost think its worth a bit more in a rolling chassis configuration, maybe someone would want to pick it up for a mod sled project or race sled. There has been alot of them parted out lately and the vipers are a kinda saturated parts market.
I would think your about right in the $2000 range for it running with the mileage, if its in average shape, but its most likely worth $1000-1500.00 as a rolling chassis. You might even get more out of it on Ebay.
If ya lived closer to me, I would buy it as a rolling chassis and make a mod sled out of it.

a used crankshaft for $300 would put it in the repairable catagory, if they are available for that price.... but if you have a good bottom end why wouldn't you replace the bad piston/cylinder or whatever and sell it as a complete motor???
I will call around and see whats available....do you have any leads for me????

dont you have to use a srx cdi if you use the crank out of a srx? just woundering i am still learning about the diferances in the two

the srx bottom end will bolt right in, but youd need to reuse your viper topend, the cylinders are completely differnt, exh port is round on srx and oval on viper, differnt bolt pattern, port length, nothing will bolt up, but the crankcase and all motor mounts are interchangeable.
No, you dont have to use a srx cdi if you run a 2000-02 srx bottom end in a viper. the srx crank is just round instead of a pork chop style in a viper, they really dont make any more power either way.

Case and crank
I am working on a deal to sell my big bore right now. If so, I may have a case and crank available for $500. Let me know if interested. This case and crank are pretty fresh. Ask MRVIPER700 - he put it together for me less than 500 miles ago.

This is far and away the best Yamaha site on the net all these guys are top shelf!!!
You should be able to find a wrecked srx or viper and piece meal a sled together and sell of the extra parts???
Or just take the plunge and buy an apex like me!!!
I am very happy with the 500 miles I got this winter
It seems pretty sensable to get the extended warranty too its like $550 or so.
