After several problems with powder being sucked into the carbs on my viper, i desided to try to solve it..

First i tried to seal off the ram air intakes, without ANY difference in the bog problem.. Removed the sealing again.. Obviously the snow doesnt come this way, atleast not the snow that bogs my engine..!

Now i tried to seal up every hole, and openings around the head light, and windscreen.. Then i took some ventilation filter pieces, and put this right behind the headliht pod, on the air filter side of the frame you can see there.. (can take pics later) This way i have filtered all the air that can come up to the pod/box above the air filter..
I also duct-taped the openings between the ram air intake on the left side, sealing it from the airbox-intake "room".. (there where some small openings just before the outlet underneeth the hood)

Then i got afraid that the motor perhaps could not get enough air because of my extra filter.. So i drilled 5x 22mm holes on the back side of the speedo (through the box the speedo sits on), and 5x 22m in the back of the hood, around the steering column..(gets covered from the pod, as a "roof" over the holes) Thinking of drilling more, bigger, holes..

Took it out for a test ride yesterday, and did my best to get some powder to come up on the hood.. Not 1 bog.. :) Before i did this mod, i almost couldnt let any snow come over the hood like this..
I found some snow on the drive-belt cover, but the air filter was all dry!
I may perhaps lost a little response from the engine, but top rpms are just the same..

Going up to the hills for some real powder tonight, so the real results will show there.. There was som much powder there, that my friend sayd he had got stuck alot more than he had been driving.. :D

I`ll take pics, if you wanna see..

powder problem

hope you fixed it, i piped my viper last month and it would not run in the powder, before the pipes it would run all day in the powder, i have the yamaha pre filters in the ram air intakes.
Some were saying it was cluthching other saying it was the exhaust plugging up. Clutched to benders specs and works great on trail however in powder it bogs.
Here is what i found the other day, the silincers coming out of the belly pan sit almost flush with the pan and there is lots of room everywhere for the exhaust gas to go back up and fill the hood with exhaust gas. on trail this is not a problem but when in powder the exhaust can't escape and fills the hood, and i also did not realize there are two vents under the hood that go into the air intake.
Sled gets no fresh air in powder and results in a bog then will clear up once you get out. my fix was to seal the holes around the silincers and add an exhaust deflector, made one myself temp, ordered one from a 2003 mountain viper part number 8en2194h0000, hope this helps.
not sure if your problem is the same but thanks to powervalve700 i solved mine its worth having a look at before you head out again

OK here is what I had in my sled for March 11 2006
2002 VIPER 136 X 1-1/2 CPR pipes & head mod
Attac
162.5 162.5 165
2.5 2.5 2.5 3-groove washer above & below
47.5 47.5 47.5
1-3/4 1-3/4 2
primary: 8EK empty stk spring YWY
secondary: 43' silver spring 3/3=60' (moved it to 80' when I rode it )
clutching works the best it ever has 9000-9200
19/41 gears 68 link stk chain HIGHLY RECCOMEND
not good for high speed trail ridding but who the hell wants to do that. LOL
was running 21/38 it SUCKED! could not cool belt
blew 2 belts 2 trips, rode last trip on same Yamaha belt and going with it again!
stock mountain viper exhaust deflector ( WHATS WITH THE HOLE IN IT?? )
sucking only outside air, ram air & dash flo-rites
2 flo-rites in dash, ram air flo-rites
drilled 2-1/4" holes in ram duct to dump air on top of air box, taped off end going to engine compartment
air box pre-filter
built aluminum plate to fill in holes around exhaust outlet
taped off ALL under hood air for air box
taped off the 2 holes in frt below bumper
put smaller screens over hood screens (needed??)

STILL BOGGS IN DEEEEP POWDER OR CARVING TO THE RIGHT

Ok.. Back from testing!

So much powder, i almost was afraid to stop :D guessing about 60-70cm powder.. Almost hopeless for a short track sled today.. A 05 polaris fusion with a 1,75 track also had a hard time plowing through the snow, so my Viper had kind of a hard day hehe.. (but i got back to him, keeping up with him in a drag ;) )

not ONE bog..!! Nothing, zip, nada..! i`m very happy about this! Can`t say i noticed any response loss anymore either..

Deep curves, nose dives ++, without problems..

Only thing i noticed, was that the air intake above the drive belt, let in snow so everytime i stopped i got a little worried about all the smoke from the left side.. hehe..
The drive belt lives a hard life with a 1.5" track, and so much snow :) So the cover above it also was hot, and made smoke when the snow got on top of it..

Even when i get stuck, nothing happends.. Havent made any deflector in front of the pipe outlet or anything, but the slp pipe is sticking out approx 1" of the belly.. It got a little "fat" running, but a blip on the throttle cleared it up again, and the sled got out of the snow again

Will take pics tomorrow!

Nice to hear that you solved your bogging problems, I need to fix them on my SRX.

I first thought that the bogging was (only) caused by snow build up around the pipe outlet, but after riding in some serious powder the sled almost stopped, then I noticed that all the vents in the hood were filled with snow. I thought this was wierd because I have three large holes behind my instrument cluster, my engine should get enough air from those holes.

It feels kind of awkward not beeing able to ride your sled in snow because it starst hesitating.. :). It`s suppost to be ridden in snow.. . The lake runners ain`t supposed to be ridden in the powder, but they should manage a little powder.. .
My SRX tends to bog at around 25cm of powder, that really sucks.. (ca 25cm, whenever the snow reached the exhaust outlet).

Whould be great if some of you guys could post some pics of some exhaust deflectors and some air filter mods and stuff.. .

:)

Not exactly a rocket scientist job done here, but it worked out fine so i am happy :)
