My reeds in my 94 Vmax 600 have about 4400 miles on them. I was talking to a friend at work about alot of oil running down front of engine by the exhaust manifold on both sides but clutch side is worse and he seems to think it is a cracked or worn reed. Would a worn reed cause this? I have some new boyeson reeds. When I installed them it was summer time and I had it running and the fuel smell would burn your eyes. While it was running i got side tracked and it stalled out. I think it fouled my plugs. I made other mods and this winter my dad was working on machine for me because I changed to 96 carbs and pipe. He cleaned the plugs instead of putting in news ones because it was hard to start. He kept blaming the boyeson reeds so he put worn stock ones back in. I was still running like poop so I put new plugs in and was running pretty good. I think I am gonna put the boyeson if this will solve my oil problem.

Reeds are on the intake side, so no, it is not related to the exhaust. Propbabally just an exhaust manifold gasket, they almost always wear out, especially if you took off your mainifold before.
The plugs were pooched, cleaning doesnt make them better usually. Learned my lesson here with other peoples sleds and my POS Elan!
When you said "the fuel smell would burn your eyes" where is it coming from when your coming in contact with it, in the exhaust gasses?
Either way, reeds shouldnt be casuing anything, besides if there is a leak from the intake not being bolted tightly enough or something.., casuing the fuel smell...

They should be new gaskets. Gonna double check with my dad. Machine was running in the pole barn with both doors open when eyes were burning. I have a 94 vmax 600 with larger 96 gyt single pipe. I heard someone on here talking about a better gasket but cannot remeber who sells them.

It had fouled plug(s), was probably running on one cylinder and the unburned fuel was what was burning your eyes.
The original reed valves were probably not "worn". They will normally run for the life of a motor without problem.
As others have said, the exhaust gaskets commonly leak. I always dress them with an exhaust system sealer when installing the manifold.

I remember that too but can't remember who said it................
Sounds like your oil pump may be full open, even at idle. Check the cable.

I do use way too much oil. 3/4 of a gallon for 181 miles. I have no adjustment left in my cable and I do suspect oil pump. Is there any way to test it. I had to spend 165 on one if it is not needed. Since my season is probably over I want to fix rest of bugs no so I can get a early start next year. I will probably just install the boyeson reeds. I was thinking on maker of the gasket and I beleive it is maximum performance.

First thing you need to do is adjust your throttle cable free play to 2mm
then looking down at you oil pump see if at WOT aliment marks line up
see pic.

At what point on the throttle cable do you align the free play? I have been trying to figure this out for a while.
it could be your exhaust doughnut leaking oil i had to replace one this year because it was leaking oil all over the front of the motor.

you measure your throttle cable free play at this point see pic.;
and adjust it down at the top of the carb rack.

and adjust it down at the top of the carb rack.

Then after you've done that then adjust your oil pump to it's spec.
to adjust the alinment maks adjust here;

In the old days I had a problem getting a seal on an old machine. Made my own gasket that worked so good that I have kept making them ever since. We have huge sheets of graphoil here at work that we use on all kinds of equipment. It's graphite material with a thin metal layer in the middle. About the thickness of cardboard. It's flexible and will take up any warpage of your flanges. Never have a leak.
You can get this at any industrial gasket supplier.
