Today i was riding my 02 Viper as any normal sunday.. Suddenly i noticed that it died out for a second or so..It dropped rpms, so i couldnt make it run over 3500rpms for some seconds.. then it was normal for some minutes again.. well it got worse and worse.. After a half an hour it wouldnt run at all when it`s hot.. It starts right up, but dies again after few seconds..
When i let it get cold again, it runs for a good 3-4 minutes, before it stops again.. Just enough time to get the pipes good and hot.. This happends every time i let it cool off!
When it stops, it`s exactly as it would die when i hit the stop button, or shut the ignition off.. It dies without any other signs..
I am thinking ignition, or power to the ignition system.. a rub through, a common coil wire, ignition trigger etc.. But i dont know these engines well, so i need help!
Even a drawing of the electric system would help me alot!
If anyone could give me a clue what to look for, i would be very happy!
I have looked over the wires that are close to hot objects, but not found any damage..

Its your TORS system kicking it, adjust the throttle cable to spec and it will be all good again. Usually it means its loose IIRC.
TORS is a safety device that limits teh engine RPM to 3500 in case you ever have a throttle cable break and your going wide open lets say. The engine will be limited to 3500 rpms.

If its not idling that points to a throttle cable mis adjustment as well. Check that and report back!
But i can not make it run at all more than 1 second once it`s hot..
Not with throttle, or on idle.. It stops, and there is nothing i can do to make it run AT ALL more than 1-2 seconds..

And when it`s cooled down it runs like nothing ever happened, for 3-4 minutes again..

when it quits pull the plugs and check for spark could be the staitor.
I tried to check the spark, but it`s a little hard to see.. I think it lost it`s spark when it died, but from idle to stop takes to short of a time to really be shure..
I`ll try to check up on the tors now, and come back to you!
I really appreciate the help here! Thanks!

2 years ago i had my sx700 act like that for a while then it blew up. had a crank seal gone leaked in air when it got hot and motor ended up seizing. hope thats not your problem
It runs absolutely perfectly, until it shuts down like you pull the emergency switch.. So i doubt it`s a seal..
Pulled, and bypassed, the tors sensor (the sensor below the idle adjuster) , without any difference.. Even pulled the tps sensor on the end of the throttle shaft..
And now the last time i tried starting it from cold, it even stopped after just 15 sec.. So it seems that it doesnt have something to do with heat after all.. I`m not shure..
I messed with some of the wire harness that goes up to the handlebars for a while, and when i pulled the start cord afterwards, it run for a good 4-5 minutes until i stopped it myself.. So perhaps i am closing in on the problem.. I dont know, but i`ll look more into it tomorrow..

I would suspect CDI at this point then, first TORS acting up (if your 3500 rpm was accurate) now nothing. I do not know how to test the CDI..experts out there????

Pull the wire harness from under the motor, it has a rub through. Maxdlx
Pulled out the harness under the motor, no damage to the isolation, and couldnt find any damage to any of the wires after i cut open the harness..
Also pulled out the recoil, to change the rope as i had the pipes out, but cant see any damage on the wires out of the stator either..
I`ll tape up the harness again tonight, and try to start it up again.. Hoping it could be a wire problem up to the handlebar stop button, since i found some bad work done there.. Allthough, it was`nt looking like it could short the wires like the button does when it stops the motor..
Kinger: The first two times i noticed the problem, it went down to 3000-3500, popping and barking for 2-5 seconds, but afterwards it almost stopped/came back/almost stopped etc..

Started it up tonight, an let it run until it was good and warm in 5-7 minutes..
It missed out 2 times, only for half a second or less.. Otherwise ok..
Had it running several times for 5-10 minutes after this, and nothing bad happend..
I tried to provoce it by pulling the harness back and forward on all the places i could reach, but nothing happend.. Also tried this under the cover on both left and right side (cdi, relays etc) without any reaction/faults..
I`ll try to take it up to the snow and ride it again soon.. Bet the problems appears again after a short while then.. Sh*t always happends when you are having fun....

Sounds like a vacumn leak on car! Hopefully you can track it down, a CDI could cause this.
