Hey guys, i was thinking of getting my 2000 SRX 136 ported by Don this summer. The sled has over 10,000kms or 6250miles. I have kept it in pretty good shape over the years and should only need a few things for next year. This sled has never let me down. I have yet to do compression test(never done), but i think if i was going to get the porting i would go with new top end as well. Do you think it's worth it on a 6yr old sled with with over 10,000km? I will be keeping her for at least 2 more winters..........thanks...........James

its completely up to you and if you think it would be worth it. the porting will definately make a difference.

no not too old, just maybe a fresh set of pistons and rings and it would run for ya for a long time to come yet.

Ya you would say that Don LOL! I really don't see any down side to getting this done. I will be looking to sending you my parts this fall. I will PM you later this week to work out some details..........I haven't even summerized it yet and can't wait until next year .....James

So for all you guys who got Don's porting done or any porting in general, obviously the power is good but how much did fuel mileage change? I am just playing with the idea for now but if I were to get some porting done to my 2000 SRX I wouldn't want my gas mileage to do much past 190km/tank.

porting
My 02 SRX has 10,000 miles on it. Don has my cylinders, new pistons and rings for some porting work right now.

The later model SRX's were truly the shit when it came to performance and mileage. In totally stock form, it you wanna rip, it'll hang with the best of em. And if you hang back, you'll fill up less gas then most. KEEP IT STOCK. Spend your money on carbides and hyfax. MHO.

The thing is, with current srx700 trail porting your running stock 2001 jetting for the mains, 42.5 pilots and 3rd clip on the needle(stock) but with both plastic shims under the clip. Hardly giant jets! Clutching and jetting go hand in hand for gas mpg, if you have terrible clutching youll get lousy mileage, if you have pig rich jetting and lousy clutching, then youll need to tow a fuel tanker trailer behind your sled.
Porting doesnt mean the engine will eat up a bunch more fuel, lots of cases where it actually makes the engine run more efficiently and it helps the gas mpg(assuming the clutching/gearing is good). there is alot of old wise tales when it comes to porting engines. 1.)reliability is 1 major one, thats totally false, if the works done correctly its as good as it was stock, it actually just works easier now to make more power.2.) gas mpg, explained above with clutching.
The piped vipers and other aftermarket pipes get the rap for the bad gas mpg, its when you use the 50-55 pilots your sled will use ALOT more fuel, its the design of the pipes. When trail riding your sled you run the pilot jet/needle circuit about 80-90% of the time, each carb circuit overlaps each other. So trail riding on and off the gas for short burst you never came out of the pilot circuit, the big pilotm jets to make those triple pipes roar is where all your fuel went, not in the mains, it actually takes a good 400ft of wide open running to get into the main jet, and then remember the needle circuit overlaps the main, even the pilot jet does contribute to about 2-3% of the total fuel flow in the carb.
On a side note as too miles on e cylinders, the nicasil coating is very, very hard, the cylinders will far outlast the pistons, and as long as the rings are maintained in it, the pistons are powder forged stock in a srx/viper, they also last a long, long time, they just need some service in between.
