This is for a 02 Viper. I am going to remove the entire chaincase and replace all the gears. What I would like to know is, do I have to remove the brake line from the caliper before I try and move it out of the way to remove chain case or can I leave it in tack. Have never done this job before and I am worried that I will not be able to complete job.

No you do not have to take the brake line off of the caliper, it should slide up off of the rotor once youve removed the caliper bolts. Once off of the roter it should hang out of the way with a rope or something to hold it out of the way. Getting the brake rotor off of the jackshaft may be a bitch. Be sure to have a dead blow hammer, and some sort of a prybar to apply pressure to the rotor while hitting it with the hammer. Last season I put on a light weigh rotor and hub and getting to old rotor off was a bit frustrating. Since your in that far, you should look into light weight parts. Good luck

If you are simply changing the gears you should not have to remove the caliper, Simply remove the cover and you will see the gears, there are spacers behing the top and bottom gears make sure you reinstall them in the same location to keep the gears aligned. Tip - Squeeze the brake while you attempt to loosen the lower gear bolt and Large nut that holds on the top gear.

To romove the entire chaicase you will need to remove the caliper though and It is actually quite easy once you do it the 1st time. Do not remove the brake line, simply remove the 2 bolts holding the caliper the chaincase and it will lift right off.

Replace all of the bearings while you are at it!!!

Have fun with the parking brake too . . .

On my Viper I removed all together - LMAO,

It not bad if you simply remove the cable off the emerg brake and let the roter come off with the case.

A cool trick that I heard about - the lake racers use it cause they swap gears all the time. Roll the sled onto the left side - then you can pull the chaincase cover off without draining the oil - change gears - pop the cover back on - and off you go. Obviously if you are doing an off-season overhaul you will drain and change the oil, but I thought this was a clever way to do a fast gear change.
