RE: Hood painting problems on my 1980 SRX440
Hey guys, im getting ready to have my hood painted on my SRX440, it's going a tricoat color, which shows hints of gold when the sun hits it a certain way...... anyhow, the problem I have is that I have stripped off all the old stripes ( have all new stripes/decals already made up ) and I noticed there are lots of small stress cracks in the gell coat of the hood, I guess it's a gell coat, it's very different then the regular fiberglass on the inside, and it's different then any other snowmobile hood I have ever done before. any ideas> can new gell coat be sprayed on? Or can i grind it off? or just prime it over with a thick high solid (filling) primer and prep and paint it normally???

Should be able to feather sand out the cracks and spray with an epoxy primer for good adhesion, and then paint.

The only sure fire way to get rid of them is to sand off all the old gell coat and reapply new gell coat. It's a pain in the arse for sure, but it's better than having them come back through your new paint.
