My son is considering purchasing a 97 SX700, he's always liked this model. I have a couple of questions.

Were there any issues with this sled, just wondering being that it was the first year for this chassis and engine?

If we wanted to add the newer style trailing arms for the OEM plastic skis, is it a direct bolt on or do you need to replace other parts?

To do a Viper shock upgrade, will the top mounts fit the front bulkhead?

you dont have to change the trailing arms to put plastic skis on. if you have the plastic skis and sadles thell bolt right up. Pat
 
I put a set of 98 SRX skis on mine. Bolted right on. Put a set of shims in it to keep the darting down. See if you can find a roller clutch for it. I put a Maxximum on mine and it works real well. Great sled.
 
Is it common for the bearings to fail, is there a particular mileage that they tend to fail at? Is any machining involved to install the updated bearing?

Its pretty common. The 97 had twin ball bearings on the mag side. 98 and on all the tripples used a big roller bearing. To update it you just need to add a pin to the crank case and intall the new bearing.
 
There was a couple of recalls on the 97's. They did a silent recall on the trailing arm mounts at the tunnel, the stock rivets where small, they are essentially just replaced with larger headed steel rivets if I remember correctly.

Also taller bumpstops where a available for the rear skid W arm.

One easy thing to check on a used sled is to get the VIN number and call Yamaha Cust Serv. They will give you a dealer history if any dealer repairs or warrenty work has been completed as long as the dealer ran it through Yamaha anyway. They will be able to tell you if the Dealer updates where done as well.

Overall that motor was almost bulletproof
 
Great sleds, do the updates these guys said (dont do the crank bearings until when and if they fail). These sleds really are bulletproof when maintained.
 
I did the bearing replacement just this past winter. It went very well. Sled is awesome! Sled had 3,000 mile, however it did sit for a season, allowing that bearing to get nice and dry.
 
I had a 97 700 and absolutely loved it. The only problems I had were the crank bearing problem and a bad stator which Yamaha covered. I added USI Tunnelblades and had 144 pics and have not yet ridden a better handling sled. A really good recomendation would be to add The wider handlebars from SX-R's. It makes a huge difference. The motor is a honey.
