hi, i just bought a 86 xlv 540 that had a loud knocking sound, like metal to metal. so i took the head off, by the way this is my first time working on a snowmobile motor. the left side has considerable play around the top of the rod where it connects to the piston, and there's also a little play around the bottom of the rod too. the right side has no play at all. anybody know what the hell is wrong?

sounds like you need to rebuild the crank, bearings are gone.

pull the engine and strip it down, then you'll know what parts you need, the crank probably needs a rod, pin, bearing, you won't know what else till you get it apart

You'll most likely have to send the crank in to be rebuilt! Big sled shops and some Dealerships have the equipment to do it. I've been pretty lucky, I've found good bottom ends in salvage yards. If you do find a good used bottom end, you still want to tear it apart and clean out the bearings good!
