what is a helix and what does it do and will it help my 95 vmax 500 and 96 vmax 600

A helix is a part of your driven clutch. It determines the rate at which your clutch opens/closes on the belt as you accelerate. If your 95 and 96 v-maxes do not have them currently i would be willing to bet that they will be able to move once you install a helix. Must be a really boring ride if you dont currently have one installed.
But seriously, if you want to change your clutching for better performance you will have to change other things other than just put a different angle helix in. (e.g. springs, weights, angle of twist, rivets, and any other parts which may wear within the clutches.)
Look on the tech pages and you will most likely find some sort of clutch setup for almost any late model yamaha sled.

Its the ramps on your secondary clutch that the nylon (black usually) buttons slide up and down on allowing the clutch to open and close.
You should take it apart to see how it works. Keep an eye on which spring holes the spring is in though. clean it too that always helps them work properly.
