What sort of tools are needed to do this? I'm not sure if this is something I should tackle in my garage are not.

How bad of a job is it, pull the head, then each cylinder, replace the gasket, then use a piston ring compressor to the get the pistons back in?

If I decide to do new rings while I'm in there do you guys hones the cylinders or not?

Thanks!

You have to put pistons back in through the bottom of the cylinder. Make sure you drain the block first. It is itimidating the first time, but after that it is a breeze. Where ya at again, my mind is paying for all the abuse I have put it through. Maxdlx

not that bad at all. drain the fluid pop head and cylinders off. scape off the old gasket from engine base and cylinders. once you have everything cleaned up put base gsket on then go backwards from where you sarted. i like to use a gasket tack just to make sure eveything is sealed up nice and good

I'm mear mason city, IA. So no special tools required? When re-ringing do I need to hone the cly? Thanks!

Before you put the piston with new rings back in, you need to hone the cylinder walls to remove the glaze from the cylinder walls. This is done with a cylinder hone that in most cases has spring loaded hones on a device that can be driven by a drill. This allows the new rings to You should get a good crosshatching by moving the drill in and out of the cylinder bore, and produce a cross hatch pattern at 45-50 degree angles to the cylinder.
The face or portion of the piston ring that interfaces with the cross hatched cylinder wall is tapered to allow only a small portion of the ring to contact the honed cylinder wall. When the engine is operated, the tapered portion of the face of the piston ring rubs against the coarse surface of the cylinder wall causing wear on both objects. At the point where the top of the peaks produced by the honing operation become smooth and the tapered portion of the piston ring wears flat break in has occurred.
