I am new to the world of yamaha, and relatively new to sledding (last machine was a indy 400) and have just bought an '02 SX Viper 700. The sled has 4300 mi. but is in excellent condition, as far as I can tell (no mods except a Bender Can). I ride dirt bikes and 4 wheelers pretty hard, and I can't see it changing with this sled. The previous owner was very particular with it, but I'm wondering if he may have neglected some maintenace steps due to the fact that he had a new sled ordered. If you guys could give me some pointers on what to look for and maybe some small tunning tips ( as I have no more money, this year anyway, for big bolt on mods) it would be greatly appreciated.

as long as the belt is good, powervalves are clean, and the carbs are clean you should be ok. there were a few recalls on those sleds for a few things like the fuel pump and hood popping out of place. maybe someone else will chime in, but I think you can call yamaha customer service with the vin and find out if these issues were addressed. best mod for those sleds is probably more traction ie a better track. motors are pretty smooth and make decent power. the clutching that everyone does is the clutching I have in my signature. it was cheap, easy and fast to do. I am now getting 15 mpg and it is a lot stronger. if you are looking to drag race it and every second counts put the stock can back on. if you just trail ride and like the sound keep it. I cant feel mine being slower with a bender can, and I really like the sound. whew! any more questions, ask away!!

Thanks 03VIPERGUY,
This is a great site, the guy who sold me the machine recommended it and it's already paying off. I sled with some ex-ice oval racers so it makes the trips pretty exciting keepin' up with those boys. I live in Eastern Ontario, have you ever toured around here ?

I was new to the the same sled and yamaha 2 years ago as well, and they are just a great sled (came from indy 440's as well). You will enjoy it! Do the cheap clutching as suggested and just give her a once over. Change out the gear lube in the chaincase for some ATF and you reduce a little friction there. I love mine to death and would like a new one but mine is so fun why spend another $7000, it isn't going to be $7000 more fun! ha ha

yes for sure. I got better low end, midrange and no loss in top end. also went from about 13mpg up to 15 mpg, same as my friends apex GT :)

post some pics of the sled if you can. another good thing to do is summerize it. everyone does it different. some fog and add sta-bil. some fog and remove gas. I usually remove all the gas and run it till it dies. loosen track tension, lift off the ground to unload eveything if you can, and clean it up real nice! grease everything

Ya I'm building a lift right now for it, I plan on fogging it real good. What I've done with my other sled is syphon all the gas out of the tank and then rout a line from the fuel pump to a gerry can with 20:1 KLOTZ and then hold the infector cable wide open as it runs for 10 minutes or so. Then I disassemble the carbs clean them thuroughly and then reassemble, it hasn't let me down yet.

If you want to make it animal (as if 120hp wasn't enough) add some pipes, with the right supporting mods (head, srx base gasket, optiocool, etc etc) they can be reliable although you pay for all the extra power in fuel usually around 8-9mpg when your done.

First yammi,

I would just get a good cheap clutch kit to put in it which includes 8DN-20 weights, few engagement shims, 51/43 helix (51/43 helix is stock on a RX-1) with a green secondary set at 70, SRX base gasket. you cant go wrong for the price. you'll love the extra performance. Just ride it like that and dont worry about pipin it. You may also get a head gasket and take 1 layer off if it hasnt been done already.

should be able to run stock jets. its only when you pipe the sled where you may run into problems with jetting and cooling. If ever in doubt, it will never hurt to go one size up especially on cold days.

better cooling even for stock pipe. i never owned a viper but thats one of the first things i would do since the viper mono-head design is not the greatest. the extra coolant flow should also help with the head gasket mod

oh. I went for the rear cooler instead. more surface for cooling vs the better flow. little over 6k miles and NEVER a problem :)
