last saturday a bunch of us went out and raced 500 feet and a wheat feild, everyone pulled ther sleds out of their barns and sheds and ran them, the sleds that showed where: apex gt supercharged, mach 1000, srx 700, skidoo 600 Ho, 3 f6's, 1 F7, 2003 polaris 800, 2006 polaris 600HO. and a few more.

I made it to the final with the old 2002 srx. so it was me and the F7. I ended up losing by about a sled length. (in 500 feet) most of the cats where tied down and they all are not stock except for one.

heres my question, what do i need to do for grass: jetting, suspention, gearing, clucthing, etc.... I went out there bone stock, the only i have is:

8Dn-20 weights with 4.5 in each hole
WWW yamaha primary spring
51-43 helix from an RX1
green secoundary spring wrapped at 80

any help would be great, thankx

CLUTCHES

just a set of 8BU-00 weights with a bender orange spring and 12mm of engagement shims. Put a 4.5 gram rivet in the tip of the 8BU weights. The 8BU weights are yamaha's best weight for racing short distances. the 20's are for the trails and racing long distance. the helix is good just try it at 70 with that green spring.

JETTING
Main jets 135 mains all the way across and pull your needles up all the way (c-clip on the very bottom notch)

GEARING

for 500 feet use a 19/40. for 600 use a 20/40 660 use a 20/39

get your sled on a jack stand or rea in the air. loosen up the front rear shock and tighen up the limiter straps all the way than snug down the retainer nuts on the shock spring till you can feel some resistance on the spring when you turn it by hand.

I have some gears if you need them. I habe a ton. but just dont mix hyvo and sx style gears and chains together. 00-02 srx has hyvo gears. i have a ton of hyvo gears and sx style none hyvo gears and chains

what about the rear shock? as loose as it will go? then strap it down solid? and the front strap it down as much as it will go? Do i want transfer or no? always thought the front rear you wanted it putting pressure . Transer rods set to Max? FTA set that to what?

sorry for so many questions?

DUDE, YOU CAN LEAN ON THAT JETTING ALITTLE MORE THAN NORMAL WITH THAT 02 SRX. THAT DCS LITE WILL TELL YA IF YOUR TOO LEAN. 3:16 (tony)

yea but if your drag racing it will retard the timing when you dont want it to. if you unplugged the sensor, that would be bad too cause you might be eating pistons just over some fun

just have to test the jetting to see how far you can go with it during some test runs. you want to jet it to a point where the light doesnt go off

132.5, 132.5, 133.8 works pretty good in summer conditions!! I use 20/39 gearing, super tip weights, 15mm rollers, advant-edge helix.

yammiegod,

thats what i was pertaining to. I tested 130's all the way across got nothing but a flashing light. I went with 135's, and light quit flashing and it was safe just enough for 500 feet in the summer. didnt flash anymore after that.

Srxspec, what distance were you running with the 20/39? just curious 19/40 worked best for me in 500 feet with 9 tooth drivers. 21/39 with 8 tooth worked good for me as well.

tom, the difference in rider weight can easy account for the difference in gearing there. Speccerhead is a lighter guy than you are and a 0.15:1 difference in gearing isn't much at all.

Not to hijack this thread, but you guys don't warm up your sleds at all before a run do you??? Only grass drag I've ever been to was in Parkston, SD last year. Seems to me they only start the sled up, rap it up on the stand and run 'em. I realize you don't want to let the motor run anymore than you have to because they get hot so fast in the summer, but is there the possibility that the motor could cold seize or isn't that possible since you're only going a short distance and the motor warms up much faster since it's summer.

tomseal6, 19/40 gearing is only good to 85 mph at a 1:1 clutch ratio. We run upwards of 89-90 mph in 500' and 20/39 gearing is good for 91 mph at a 1:1 clutch ratio. It's just what works for us.

shortstop20, yes you can cold seize the engine if you don't put enough heat into it. Usually you'll want the water temp around 100*F. It doesn't take much to build water temp in the summer time. Hopefully you can make it to Parkston on Aug 6!!

132.5, 132.5, 133.8 works well in most conditions guys! The SRX's like to be a little richer rather than lean. They will fall off on top end when too lean.

My motor is always at 100 degrees, never gets any cooler around here anymore, went on a poker run two weeks ago, 117 in Pierre. :whine:
