Im going to get ready to make a template to drill 3 holes between each lug down the middle. 2" camoplast track im doing it on. the thing is, does it Matter where i need to postion the holes, for the boogy wheels/idler wheels?

not sure but from my experience from studding, it doesn't matter if the boggy wheele rides on the stud or not, you'll notice it when you cross a road thats about it..just watch out for the wheele when drilling thats all.

I made a template from 3/4" plywood. It was about 2" wide and long enough to cover the track windows. I cut 2 small pieces the same size as the windows and nailed them to the first strip so they would drop into the windows. I drilled 3, 1/4" holes in the wood template and used a 1/4 drill bit to drill the track. I used the 1/4" holes as a guide for the center drill of the 1" hole saw. I removed the teeth from the hole saw and sharpened it to a knife edge. It made a 1/2 drill work fairly hard. 2 of the holes are directly over an internal rear idle wheel. Crazy Mountain Extreme does his this way so I thought I would try it. I took the track off the sled for drilling. Hope this helps you.

Hey Auji, go to the project section and look for SRX Mountain sled project. Way back I posted some pics of the template and the drilling process.

ModMMax(name?),ill post a picture later on tonite to show you. Im thinkin about Cutting a LARGE hole Between 2 Lugs, all the way up the track and 2 smaller ones On the outside of the bigger one. No holes On the Outside of the windows, i heard its Kinda Dangerous as to Track Rip.
so its kinda like this.. o O o I kinda want to get out as much weight as i can from the middle of the track so i dont have to touch the Outside.

aj, keep them out of the wheel lines or they will vibrate at higher speeds.

I'd be nervous about cutting a hole bigger than 1.25 inches. Track drilling weakens the track. Bigger holes and more holes decreases the track life and decreases the tracks ability to provide cooling in marginal snow conditions. However, every mod has a consequence. Good luck.

k, So Its a Bad idea To cut the Holes Where the Wheels ride on. So im going to have to put my skid back in and Remeber Where the wheels run and mark it. well, my plans are now is to drill 3 small holes between each lug. Then drill the holes into the Wooden template Where the wheels Dont Run. How much weight does it save? is that really the Main Purpose of track drilling, Weight savings?
By the way, Joe can you price a DEAL on a gauge pod for me?

Track drilling is a mod that is seen more in the mountains where the snow is so deep that the skid fills and adds a lot of weight to the sled. The ported track sheds skid snow better and contributes to a lighter handling sled. The down sides include reduced track life and loss of cooling abilities. Lots of mountain riders are using this mod, in fact Skidoo is factory porting their mountain tracks. However, I have seen lots of outside holes ripped out and I have seen several ported tracks ripped right through. CMX is using 6 holes. He claims a weight saving of 4 lbs. I personally think 6 holes is foolish. Skidoo is using 2 holes but they are oval shaped. I have never seen a ported skidoo track fail but Skidoo dealers will tell you that the track is built especially for the purpose. Lots of aftermarket drilled 3 hole tracks around and many of them seem to be surviving. When I did my track I was very concerned about the potential loss of cooling. I am using a digitron to monitor engine temp and scratchers to add to cooling. IMHO, I would not consider this mod except for specialized powder riding. Hope this helps you.

Yea, i understand. Well i am not a trail rider but a Very agressive powder/mountain Climber. the only Time im ever on the trails is get to the mountains.
Since you are good with the Mountain Tracks and etc.. i got a question for you..i was looking at a performance Site last night and i seen somthign im pretty intrested in.
Its a mod for 2 Idler wheels to be INside the skid not outside, Like the f-cats. Wouldnt this be a GREAT mod for those who Love to cut Powder turns and just screwin around/ditch bangin? it seems to me you can get a better carve in the snow, but it also seems like its a Hazerd to Track wear. since your always bending the track for sharp cuts in the deep snow. Thats what it seems too me, Whats your input? By the way, whats yuour name modMmax?

I'm using a Doo skid in my SRX. I think its a SC3. Last season, with the track not ported, I had heating/sticking issues on hardpack. Scratchers cured it but other sleds in the group were not heating. As a result, I intend to add "marginal snow" wheels to the curve of this skid but probably the type that mount on the outside. Internal wheels may make good sense though. Given name is Alvin.

Alvin, Wouldn't the Internal idler Wheels Cause Bending of the track Thus wearing on the track?. I might get one of those Marginal Snow wheels for the hifax, but mine seems to hold up had it for 2 years and its only starting to wear bad, but still useable. Once i Drill my track ill Show you it, im getting a new one and intend to make my sled into a full Mountain sled. 144 to a 151 and 2 1/4 finger track, then add some billet wheels.
by the way, your SRX is pretty wild. I like the black, thats what im in the process of now. can't wait! well thanks for your Info, Appreacited!
