I've been looking into clutch kits for my sled and have no idea what to look for. I have a Stock 02 Viper with Expert X and 9818 track. I'm 190lbs, agressive trail ride, and looking for more snap. Not at all worried bout top end speed. In the woods 95% of the time. So let me know if Im better off aftermarket kit or creating my own kit from Dalton Inds. Thanks :2strokes:

If you are in the woods most of the time, get a roller secondary, and tune your stock setup to work with it. Better bang for the buck IMO Maxdlx

It allows the clutch to back shift smoother. Thus if you are riding in the woods, and on and off the gas alot, it actually lets the sled shift up and down easier, not just go from 3/4 open to slammed shut. I am sure others can explain it better, but I love my HI tech er, and wouldn't trade it for anything. maxdlx

Alright who would you go to brand wise for a Secondary Roller? Ive been looking at Advant-Edge roller on Rich Motorsports. Any others to suggest? And this can handle when I wanna hold her wide open also? But you said to install this and just tune my stock set-up. What would happen if I put stiffer springs in both Secondary and Primary?

youll probobly get higher rpms... dont just change something for no spesial reason, if you read tech pages or ask TY users, they will help you get your sled where you want it..

pm member kirkswim or do a search. i have ridden his sled with his set-up on it as reccomended by turk. its a blast trail riding it and it still breaks 100mph on the lakes. his is a 2002 viper. the origonal post is on yamahainfo. hope this helps

dont know if this helps but i have 02 viper, had the 9818 track, i ran lp roller secondary w/polaris silver blue @ 110, hc's, grey spring, 15mm rollers, geared down 1 tooth and a straight 43 helix. my sled went very well. i know have the expert x 136 1.5 track and a 46/36 helix with everything else the same, the 136 and 1.5 track with the clutching the way it is is awesome. never go back to 121.

Roller secondary

Listen to your buddy. Roller secondary is not going to help corner to corner trail riding with your pals. You are far beter off using a setup from the tech pages that is chosen for drag racing. This will provide a snappier setup. Remember when clutching you always make a trade off gaining in one area while loosing in another. Yamaha uses an all around setup for the average rider and in my opionion its a lazy setup I dont prefer. I always change clutching parts from stock setups. Go back to TY home page. Then technical pages, then snowmobile tech, And finally Totallyamaha user clutch charts. Won't cost much and easy to install. Ask questions here if you get in trouble.
The viper tops out at 105-107 at the very best. You may want to gear down a tooth or two if you don't mind loosing a little on top. Down one tooth and you won't feel much. Down two and you will feel a big difference. --mac--

This is my set up 48/40 helix Heelclickers 3grams heel, 1st hole empty & 3 grams tip with the red primary spring & a green yammie secondary spring at 60 degree twist.
Or maybe 70 ?
Incl the engine torque limiter.
This thing rocks ! Im updating to a more aggresise track this season because i found to much track spin with this setup.
Also you wont lose to much top end with this set up.
Try to get it to rev at least 8600 to 8700. Most guys will say on this forum that 8400 to 8500 is fine but i found the viper needs a little more to perform well on top.
Even some of the hp charts will show max hp's at 8700 to 8800.
The viper needs to rev to get max HP'S and top end.

Either going with the 53/43 Helix with green secondary spring or gunna wait for Ulmer Racing to come out with there Viper clutch kit. Thanks guys :2strokes:

Clutch kit don't do it

Expert x don't buy a kit. When you purchase a kit you pay a premium upwards of twice three times what the parts alone are worth for work that has already been performed and tested. Buy the parts only and install yourself.

I added Turks suggestion of the 53/43 helix with a green spring at 70. I love this set up for my viper. It gave it that snappy feeling that I was looking for. My sled max at 109 mph for the condition, which is fast enough for me. Its a trail sled not a drag sled. I have great fuel milage the best of my group.
Good luck.

actually i roller is going to be better in corner to corner running and powder, if your are running lakes then buttons will be better.

Right Nodos

Yeah, what kind of advice is that......"a roller won't help for corner to corner"??? that's where you want a roller......that's what they are for.....nothing backshifts like a roller. The only drawback is usually loss of top end speed because they start to backshift when they sense loss of torque.
