Hello all I am new to site. I just bought my first sled a 1997 Yamaha Vmax 600 XTC. Yeeeee haaaaa. I was wondering if anyone had any info about this sled? Is it a good runner? Are there anythings that I should look out for? It has 1886 miles and has 144 picks or studs. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Oh is there anything that I should do to get it ready to ride? Thanks so much.

take the clutches apart clean them and replace the springs while checking the rollers and pins for wear. check the spedo side bearing and change the chain case oil. then you should be good to go for the season with a good set of wear bars/carbides on the skis.

power up wise there is always something else you can do to make it better.

Thank you very much for you input. Is it easy to change the chain case oil I pulled out the dip stick and there was not much shavings on it. I think that is a good thing. do i reallly need to drain gas and oil as well? It starts on the first pull seems to run, good I think the clutch locked up at about 3000 rpm. It is studded out and I think I saw at least 3 studs were missing is this a bad thing? The track wont fall apart on me will it? Thank you for all your help, :dunno: it is greatly appreciated. I am pure newby althou i have ridden other people's sleds before. Thanks again

well you came to the right sight. read though the tech pages and your manuel. between the two you can get a lot done. if you need any help this is a great site for it. if there werent a lot of shavings it should be ok. but if you want all you have to do to change it is look in the tunnel behind the bottom of the chain case. there is a 12mm bolt. take the dip stick out then pull that nut out. im not sure on how much to put back in (manuel will tell you) if not someone here will know or can find out. might want to prop up the front of the sled so all the oil comes out. i run synthetic oil in mine. think thats about it.you can also take the chain case cover off to get it all out and look at the gears.

Thank you very much for your info I think I need a manual lol. I have learned quite a bit on this site and all the people seem to be pretty helpful. One day when I customize my own sled I will be sure to put TOTALLYAMAHA.COM on it somewhere

Welcome aboard. With the chaincase oil, I just pull the side cover off and let it drain that way. You can then remove your chain and gears to check them for wear & tear.
Pay atenntion to the order of washers and spacers for re assembly.
You can find anything you need to know about your yammy on this site. The best advice is do a search. Read every post you can.

also, take the serial ## and call yamaha and ask them if the sled has had all the updates done. there were a few odds and ends. I had a 97 600, once the updates were done I had 9000+ miles on it in the end :)

Very good thank you i will do that. Do ya remember some of them? And will I just take it to the local sports shop if it does need the updates and they will take care of it for free?

they added bumpstops in the rear skid, bigger rivets where the trailing arms meet the footrest, different rings and ring clips, and I think that was about it. oh, SOME of the spindles in the front end were recalled, I think. I beleive that any local dealer should be able to fix it for free as it was a recall, but I am not positive. at least the engine stuff is worth it even if you have to pay for it! hope this helps :)
