during an unfortunate drift jumping episode last winter i rolled my sled on of the noticible drop in my handle bars i think they just rotated in the clamp. but i hear talk of weak steering shafts where on the shaft do they braek so i can look in this area by the way it's a 98'

they useally breck right where the steering post is welded to the plate where the handlebars bolt on top.

I was ditch-banging with my msrx which you know is a 98. my steering post got all bent up so I switched in a mtn. viper steering post. Works absolutely wonderful, I highly recommend it. I got it from mtn perf. Its got a gusseted top plate mount, oversized diameter, and it was lighter than my 98 post. so stronger and lighter coming from a stock newer post that bolted right in.

my bars broke right where the plate bolts on to the post during hard acceleration too much power hahahaha. i ordered a new post from yamaha and the new one was beefed up around that area more weld and stuff. mine was a 98 as well

Yea... when they break, THEY REALLY BREAK not just bend. My case was to make some suspension adjustments. Tried to pull the sled over on it's side and the plate broke off the shaft, sent me flyin on the pavement... i can sometimes get a temper, so i decided to kick the thing and call it names infront of people LOL just kidding... i didn't kick it.
I thought there was no way that thing should have broke that easy... i was almost ready to buy a Firecat.
I'm just lucky i wasn't leaning hard into a turn when that thing decided to break
