A buddy of mine picked up an 03' Raptor 80 with a blown piston. He replaced the piston and rings and has it back together but it won't fire. He has fuel and spark so he's thinking he might not have the cam set right. Anyone know what the cam orientation should be so he can double check it?

Thanks,
Tom

any 4 stroke engine has the same set up, when the piston is at top dead center the cam timing would be set up so that the rockers are on the heel of the camshaft, meaning the lowest section. I would remove the flywheel cover and look to a timing mark on the flywheel to case, you can verify the timing mark by inserting a philipps head screw driver thru spark plug hole to verify piston is at top dead center. rotate the engine slowly by hand back and forth and you will see where true top dead center id by the screwdriver touching the top of the piston. Now with the cam cover off verify the rocker arm contact pads are on the heel of the cam meaning both valves should be closed, and there should be valve clearance on both the intake and exh valves because they are at 0 lift each. there is almost always a mark on the cam sprocket to indicate the timing of the camshaft. these usually corespond with a mark on head or align with the bolts on the cylinder timing chain tensioner. I dont have the service manual on your paticular vehical, but again, they are all the same wether its a 50cc single to a 650cc single.
