OK, so pulled a buddy's pipes on his SRX to check his powervalves. Engine is fresh with only a few miles on it. 2 pistons are spotless to look at on the exhaust side, the centre has like vertical scratches in it, they start about 5/8" below the rings. Should he be worried about this? Should he replace that piston? I don't want to tell him one way or the other, as I am no engine builder. I shoved the camera in the port as best I could, can't really tell how deep they are. Thanks for any opinions.

Well from what I can see in the pics it really doesn't look all that bad I mean I wouldn't pull it apart to change it.I've had worse looking ones than that and they seemed to run fine.
If he's worried about it do a compression check as stated above and confirm that it still has decent ring seat.Compression should run around 125 to 130 for SRX's if I'm not mistaken.

it should definately be alright, however if they continue to get bigger and deeper i would change the piston and have a look at the cylinder, but it looks fine to me.

looks like the scratched one is also the cylinder that was bead blasted, most likely it was some of the bead blast particals that made its way in the cylinder.

I agree with mrviper700. Great catch Don, cylinder likely wasn't washed well enough after blasting. Hopefully it has all worked itself out. I would check it periodically to see if it worsens.

OK, I'll have to take a compression tester over, didn't have one with me at the time, and make sure that cylinder is consistent with the others.
The bead blasting thing seems entirely feasible, but I thought he said that jug and piston were new, so there shouldn't have been any beads?
Could have been other dirt too I guess. I was wondering if there were burrs on the port, but then I guess the rings would be marked up, and they are not.
Thanks for the replies. ;)!

cylinder

srxer even if the cylinder is new you should still wash it.It's fine though

OK, thanks for all the replies guys. I'll pass on the good news, I'm sure he'll breathe easier. ;)!

I usually don`t care about visible scratches as long as I can`t feel them with my finger.. .

It could be that the exhaust port edges wasn`t rounded enough?.
I bet it will be ok... no worries.. full throttle !
