I have a 02 Viper stock track, aftermarket transfer rods, HC cltuch kit and helix. When we do the lake run drags with the friends I cant get this thing to hook up. I am Studded with 144 Mega-Bites 1.075 with the stock track. I know the track isnt that good but on ice shouldnt the studs be doing the work? I have adjusted the suspension to make it better and am down to spinning just the first 10-15 feet then it hooks up. Woody's site recommends 144 for trail and 192 for performance for this sled. What are you guys running for studs and how many? Do you thing adding 48 more will help? Track is studded outside rows not just the center. :o|

If your on ice NO!, you trail studs just spin on the ice, you need chisels or picks to hook on the ice . If you just want to trail ride add another 24-48 studs down the center.

I had 144 trail studs in my SRX which didn't hook for crap on ice. Put in 48 more to get to 192. Helped a little on bare ice but, still isn't competitive with something that has ice picks or chisel studs. I do a whole lot more trail riding than drag racing so, I stuck with the carbide trail studs because I don't want to buy new ones every month.

Just my experience and 2 cents worth.

LOL... ;)!

studs

On the viper with the stock pipe runn 144 anything more just kills your top end if youpipe then definatley go 192.
The srx's I would definatley go 192 I always had good luck .

i have 192 but not for long when i replace my track this fall there will be no studs in it tired of changing tracks with 3 cornered tears where a pick used to be.

They put some nice dents in the top of your tunnel when it flies apart at 100 mph too LOL :o|

I used to have 196 in my old track now running unstudded ;)!

studs

I have 240 in my stock track on my big bore 01 SRX. I have almost 4000 miles with out a tear one. I ride in alot of marginal snow here in the east.

If you guys are running on ice and don't wanna slip, you have to keep in mind the guy who can lay on a bed of nails. Could he lie on a bed of 20 nails? NO.

When ice dragging and you don't wanna slip, you want to run as few studs as possible without putting to much power to each stud. We tried running 240 on our piped vmax4 when we first got it and guess what, when we took it out on the ice, it spun forever! There wasn't enough pressure on each individual stud and they couldn't bite. We are now running 144 in that track and IT WILL NOT SLIP. When we first took it out, I thought it was going to flip right over when my dad hit the gas, it stood right up. In general we try to run 144 studs on majority of out sleds or possibly even 120 studs if we can get away with it. Not to mention less rotating weight. Hope this helps

2000srx...I hear ya on the stud count. My point was use the right type of stud for what you want to do. Trail studs for trail and pics or chisels for ice.
Also, I saw your SRX at Haydays with all the polished parts. That is a beuttyful sled! Your posted pictures don't do it justice. It's much nicer in person. I'm glad it was you that did all the work and not me.
Here's a comparison for everyone: In the same amount of miles as me, my kid tore a bunch of studs out of his track and blew it up. My track is fine and has no missing studs. The difference is, I learned long ago to let off the gas and not spin my track. ;)!

Is it suitable to run a combination of ice pics w/ trail studs (like 96 trail, 96 pics)?

I ask b/c we do a fair amount of running on the ice and it's nice to be able to get traction for once, but also do our majority of riding on the trail. Sounds like it makes sense, but wasn't sure.

If this is a viable solution, what is a good pattern for it?

Thanks!

When you do the lake run drags is the lake plowed down to bare ice or is there some packed snow on it?

If there is any packed snow left on it then I'd suggest changing the track first because the tracks on the 02's suck. I put a 9837 1" Predator on mine and it's a night and day difference.

I run my Viper without studs against my Vmax-4 (192 trail studs) on a packed lake and the Viper hooks up just as good as the Vmax-4. Clean ice is obviously a difference story.

When we run it is on plowed section of ice. We try to find the sections that are not beat up from other people doing the same thing. As like you get at a radar run (trenches). Did you lose any up on top end with the 1 inch? :dunno:

You know its funny you mention that, I lost a ton of top end on the srx when i studded it this last winter. I through the new Hacksaw in and ran it for a few days before studding it and top end was awesome, through 192 in there and really lost a lot of top end. Man is that thing a gunner out of the hole though. Was gonna pull out 48 of them this year and see if i notice a difference or not...

192 with plastic backers with no tear outs or broken backers. Have held up really well over 4500 miles. I'm switching to 136" Ice ripper with 120 trail studs up the middle. I spoke with Tom Hartman (hartman Inc.) and he said that there has been real good feed back with that set up. Benefits, longer track at 136" x 1.25", built in studlets to save weight and rotating mass and the extra trail studs give it extra bite when needed on ice. I'll move to 8 tooth extrovert drivers and leave the gearing stock. Please send donations to: JK
