been trying to help a buddy get a 1985 SRV running but we must be missing something.
sled starts fine but will jump to 3000 stay there for a few seconds and then come down and stall out, if the choke is slightly engaged it will idle back up but still high. slightly meaning just barely moving the choke lever til you feel the cable tighten.
wide open-will run for a few seconds then sounds like its running out of fuel and shut down.
possibly a float problem?
sounds like it lean? turning pilot screw (similar to fuel screw on mikuni) while idling has no effect.
carb has all stock jetting and has been cleaned, sprayed carb cleaner through all opening/holes and checked for flow out other end, so i don't think it is blocked and it is new.
we have sprayed starting fluid around engine to check for air leaks (heads, intake, crank seals), does nothing.
if you need additional info please ask.
any help is very much appreciated.
Thanks

If it's been sitting around awhile it is always good to check airbox for critters like Mice. It could be a coil or a bad spark plug boot. If it is original may due to be changed along with some new plugs. I would also pull carbs and clean thoroughly and check float level.

Its in the fuel system. Recheck the carb and replace all jets. just spraying carb cleaner through is not a sure fire way of making sure the passages are clear. If you need any info (foat hight etc.) let me know. I have a factory service for the SRV. Also check the fuel pump out. Replace fuel lines and the pulse line. Brad

yes but...
Yes, check the float level and all fuel lines for breaks.

Check the fuel pump and pulse line.
I had carb issue with a VLX 540 with less then 1000 miles on it that would die out. I found the galvanized coating on the inside of the bowl was flaking off and working it's way it the jets. Odd stuff, like the fuel was eating it.
