Hi all, I'm on my second year snowmobiling now and i'm addicted. I just picked up an 04 SXViper and was wondering how to tell if it's an S model. Does the SX mean its an S model? Is this the best Viper Yamaha made? I was given a shock udjusting tool with the sled, but I can adjust the front by hand. Is there a dampening adjustment on the rear or only spring adjustment?

Welcome to the site !! The 04 Viper S was Black with red graphics and ohlin shock on the front with comression adustment only. The rear shock has a flat head style adjuster for compression only on the top side of the shock if I am not mistaken.

Does it look like this; if so it's a S, great sled, I'm getting one next season. I'll get in touch with you and get some feedback...enjoy your season-track side down

the fronts are ohlins on the S but, the rears are not even rebuildable. they have spring adjustment but no dampening adjustments whatsoever. the regular and er vipers have rebuildable front and rear shocks (again no rebound or dampening adjustments). welcome to the site and the addiction. ski

Mr. Viper,
I have a stock 04 Viper and the center cyl is running leaner then the outer 2. Did Yamaha change anything in 04? My 03 did not have this problem. I know they added the deto sensor and I heard they reduced compression in one of the cylenders. Anywhay what adjustments can I make to get all 3 cyl running toasty brown. Right now the outer 2 cyl are dark brown/black and the center cyl is light brown. I have heard of two other 04 viper owners cooking thier engines center cyl I don't want to be next.

they didnt change the compression from the earlier vipers, and the carb specs didnt change either. You may have a dirty jet or maybe somebody changed the jetting or clip position on the needles at some point. Get in the carbs and see what you have going on in there.
