It is common to get the heads shaved on the 98-99 srxs, even for trail riding. Can easily take off .010" for some more compression, run premium.

I could have sworn I read something years ago about people shaving .030" off the heads and then adding a second base gasket to set compression back to normal but alter the locations of the ports. Does this sound familar to anyone? This could be another option if it is indeed true.

Yes sir that is also a mod that works well, gets the exhaust ports up higher to give it a little more top end h.p. as well as maintaining compression.

Ya I did that to my 98 added 2 base gaskets and shaved 0.030" off the heads worked pretty well ran neck and neck with any F-7 I came across. wich is good for a 98 cause they had less power than the newer models and F-7 had 140 ponies supposedly.

Been doing that mod for years on 98-99 600-700 SRX & single pipe triples. Good for about 6 hp. Cheap mans porting job.
