I have an 87 Exciter with the stock track, need to get some more traction, right now it is un-studded. I was wondering if I would be better off studding this track or swapping it out for a better one. Not even sure if I can stud this sled as there is no tunnel protection. Would anyone know if tunnel protectors are available and the longest stud I could safely use.

Thanks

I put 96 .875 studs on my stock PZ II track. I did put in hockey stick shafts as tunnel protectors though! So far so good. The studs help a great deal.
I have some pics if you'd like to see.

Thanks for the replies, so can I assume that tunnel protectors are not available and that I would have to make them. I have seen your pictures with the hockey stick shafts. Great idea. I was thinking about the 1" finger track like the one used on the stock '03 RX-1, could I go with a 1" lug safely without studs? Thanks again.

Hey Bob . . . have you had the carbs off that sled . . im wondering the placement of the little rubber plugs ?

Chris - here is a picture of the carbs with the bowls off. I figured it was easier to show you than to tell you. Let me know if these are the plugs you are talking about or if you can't pull up the pictures, I will e-mail them to you. Thanks.

Ok thanks Bob . . . i was just wondering , i have them on a 440 exciter and when i give it gas about half throttle you can see gas spitting out , i was told if the plugs were in the wrong place that could be it but it looks like mine are ok . . . back to more jetting i gues ,
Thanks again

Hey Bob!!

How's it going. Did those carbs work out for you?? I sure hope so!!

I put a 1" Cmoplast Energy on my 87 Exciter and was very pleased with the results.

One other trick I used was to put some Fox shocks (off a few dead Polaris) in the rear skid and it made an amazing imporvement to the ride.

Cheers,

Yes Exciter Fan the carbs worked great. The sled runs awsome now. I also found I had a vacumn leak from a bad crank shaft seal on the mag side.Tore the motor down, new seals rings and 1 piston runs like new.I picked up a used track from a 2000 mxz with .88 lugs that I am going to try.If I can find some fox shocks I will put them on also. Thanks for the reply. Good to hear from you. Bob.

Glad to hear the carbs worked out for you. Better being used for fun than sitting in my garage.

If you can find a fox shock off of the front of a Poolaris, you'll see that it fits pretty close in the rear of the skid. I had a buddy who rebuilds schocks make some minor modifications to ensure the stroke was right. There is also another Fox Shock from the cat family which is pretty close the the front shock in the rear skid. It made a huge difference in the ride.

I was running a Comet 108EXP primary with a yellow (or Blue) Comet spring with 53gram cat weights. Everyone told me the 570 wouldn't pull that many grams, but that's what I needed to get the RPMs right.

I sold my Exciter and moved up to an SXR600, but I wish I had kept the Exciter just to have it around. I miss it.

My dad made tunnel Protectors for my 88 Exciter, can't remember what he used or what they even looked like. I bought a used track with 250 miles on it with 144 studds from the local fix-it shop, I had to mess with the clutching do to the added weight but it wasn't that bad, had a slight bog off the line after he put the studded track on. I miss my old Exciter, hope the people who bought it have as much fun on it as I did.
