Hey, guys whats up. I've always wanted a SRX, does it matter what year I buy?

Is their a year that I want to stay away from?

Is the 600 the same motor as the 700, just different size jugs?

Anything I should be looking for that shows the sled was hammered on?

Thanks for any feedback that you can give me, I've save enough money and a little tired of riding my Attak all the time, need to go old school for a while and hear that sweet sound of those three cylinders.

The SRX is a great sled and you will be amazed by it's power. You would be wise to purchase SRX's between the years 2000-2002. The 2002 was equipped with a DCS system that prevented your engine from running to lean. The only thing I recommend to you is throw some viper rear shocks to get a better ride out of it or any other after market suspension. Let me know if you have any other questions and I will be happy to help you out.

98-99 had crank issues im pretty sure... 2000 and up would be best for the most power if your going with a 700, dont really hear much about the 600's but what i hear they are the fastest in there class 2! You will like this sled, makes my viper look silly on the lake :dunno:

the difference between the 98-99 and 00+ wasn't a whole lot, power wise. The brighter headlight is nice, but it's not a deal breaker (for me anyways.) there was various suspension calibration differences between the years, but I seriosly believe that the #1 thing you can do to enjoy the sled, smartest money you'll ever spend, is to get the video that explains it, watch it and take notes, trust me, it'll save you money on suspension bits, and it'll make a HUGE difference on your enjoyment of the sled, they really ride pretty good when they're calibrated properly.

overall, I'd say it doesn't much matter what year you get, go for whichever one gets you the best deal. I really prefer the 2002 'cause of the DCS, but it's not worth spending an extra grand over.

The DCS doesn't actually prevent the sled from running too lean, it just senses the harmonic vibrations characteristic of detonation (from too low of octane, poor fuel quality, too lean of mixture, etc) and incremently retards the timing in order to prevent further detonation and potential engine failure. Great feature to have. Also, the 00-02 srx's have about 6 more horses than the 98-99's, and have a much lighter flywheel which helps the throttle response. The '01 and '02 have a lighter brake disk than previous years, and the '00-'02 suspension calibration is a lot different than the 98-99s for better hook up. This is due to shorter transfer rods, and more center shock spring preload. As others said, the '00 and up have the dual beam headlight with the 300W stator. '01 got seperate hand and thumb warmer controls which is nice.

Thanks alot guys, keep'em coming. I had a line on a 99, but it was hammered and needed alot. Going to look for a 00-02.

Just for the future, say I needed a set of heads for a 01, can heads off a motor from a 98 work? Wondering if parts are as interchangeable as the 03-06 Firecats.

;)!

There is no need to talk about firecats in here... sry i really have no clue i have never owned an SRX :o|

no they dont, the "squish" is different from the 98-98 to the 00-02 s.. they can be machined to the same, but its better to get a stock head then.. olso different porting on cylinders if you where wondering about them as well;)

I found a 98 SRX 700 today while I was driving down the road, the sled needs alot of work. Its has rust all over the rear and front suspention, rear tail light is completly lose, motor compartment needs alot of cleaning, needs a track, bearings in the wheels and has 5,860 miles. But its straight and has a set of Olins on the front, the guys asking $2,000. What would you guys offer him?????

Thanks alot anything info. would help, I don't want to be rude but I don't think its worth $2,000.

you want to start with a 2001, they are the best year, install a wider front end with long travel shocks and an m-10. the 01 is worth it for the headlight and separate hand and thumb warmer.

5800 miles is not alot of use IMO. there was a crank bulliten issued on the 98-99 srx 6 & 7 ,so check the vin # with your local yamaha dealer to se if the crank was ever done. if it was get yourself a compression tester to check the condition of the engine . if that comes out fine i would say nab it . offer him $1800.00 and run with it. with a little money and tlc you will have one of the fastest and best looking sleds ever made!!

Video?

Junior - you mentioned a video - which one and from where? I just bought a 98 SRX 700 ($1700) - picking up this weekend - and want to make the most of it.

Junior was referring to the Yamaha Proaction suspension set up video, and any yamaha dealer should be able to order it for you.

bingo.

there was a part number flying around here awhile back. That $25 video is the best money you'll spend on that sled period, will save you wanting to spend $2k on suspension later.
