I'm a good full day into this bitch already and I can't for the life of me get the F'in chaincase off the top drive shaft. I've pried, tapped, hammered, pounded, cussed, and drank beer, NONE of which have helped move that dirty bastard. Needless to say, I'm getting to the point of I don't give a F anymore, all I want is the track swap done with. SO, I need some help ASAP before I go out and kill someone....

heat the jackshaft up, spray it with penetrating oil and repeat a couple of times. also a dead blow hammer hitting the jackshaft while prying the chaincase away from the tunnel should help a bit. dont get greedy and pry a hole in the case though!

Ok, update....I pulled the brake caliper off and the chaincase slid seperated from the brake disk. Now the mechanical brake is hanging up on the brake disk...is there any easy way to remove that POS easily? I think I'm almost there, just need to do something with the mechanical parking brake...

THANK YOU FOR THE QUICK REPLIES!!!!

when there stuck there stuck! the brake disk is the culprit.remove the carbs if you cant get a long chiesel against the hub of the disk and tap it off the jack shaft.of course a dab of grease on the keyway will make it slide the next time and your brake pads will work together not one and not the other.

Is it really necessary to remove the disk? I know from a maintenance perspective, I *should* remove and grease it, but I just don't care anymore, all I want are the drivers out and new track in....How much of a pain in the *** is it to take apart the mech. parking brake?

don't know why you need to pry to pull out that chaincase
just take off the caliper and handbrake and remove all those bolts around the chaincase and the chaincase should drop off

You really don't want to take that parking brake apart. The way we take off the chaincase is all in one unit. We take the outer housing off, then we take the nut off the top gear and the bolt off the bottom. Then we wiggle and hit the jackshaft and driveshaft with a hammer and pull everything off as one unit. All you need to do is tkae off the parking brake cable from the parking brake then once you get the jackshaft and drive axel losse you pull the brake rotor, chain case housing and parking brake off the two shafts all at the same time. Remember that there is a spacer that goes between the chaincase and the brake rotor when putting it back together. Hope this helps.

Yep, that's where I am now. I'm done for tonight, I can't look at it anymore. Tomorrow morning, I'll just remove the parking brake and be done with this. I can't stand to look at or mess with it anymore tonight. My patience is shot. Many kind thank yous to those that have helped...and if you can come up with any other tips/tricks, I'm all for it!

hand brake and caliper is so easy to take off don;t know why you tru to let them there

The best is yet to come.Went thru this myself.Lucky I didn't own a gun last summer..or I would of shot something. And to top it off, I did this in the F..in hottest day of the summer which didn,t help things.I think we should prepare to help likkerpig as much as we can or else someone could get hurt.LOL :dunno:

i just finished watching the leafs and the habs and i swear there is more fighting on here tonight lol the first time is allways a bitch.pulling the coolant bracket over the mount is fun.

A good night of sleep certainly helped my attitude some, we'll see how it goes when I put a wrench back on it!! I'm live in Fargo, ND. I think I'm going to just remove the parking brake and if I can't get it back together, BFD. That or I'll try pounding on the rotor a little and see if I can break it loose. Whatever is easier, at this point!

That project is done! Funny, I gave it a little tap with a screw driver handle, popped the disk right off!! Thanks all for the quick help!!!

Sometimes you just need to walk away from things and start out with a cool head in the morning. Same way with computers. Can't tell you how many times I worked on software/install issues late into the night only to figure the problem out on the first try the next day.
