i also have a 540 xlv and last year i had an issue come up occasionally the sled would start to die not just bog. if i hit the brake the revs would come back up and sometime run fine for a while. so i removed the bulb and no problems anymore, you guys can see where this is going first of all i need a taillight, second of all i believe i have a chafing issue. now theres a light on the tach for the brake light which also serves as a warning light for the oil tank. i have traced all the wiring and found no chafing, do you guys have any ideas on this anyhelp would be appreciated.

I second SID's thought. Check the tail light ground between the socket and engine - with an ohmeter if you have one. If you cannot find the trouble spot (it may be within a taped up part of the wiring harness), you could add a wire between the tail light and a black harness wire farther forward, or to the engine. Adding a ground wire between the engine and frame should also help.
