Is it really worth it do do this mod???
I have a 98 700 XTC-P.
I run Super (Premium) all the time anyway, but the only problem I can see is where I ride the gas might be sitting for a while in the pumps and not be fresh.
Any info would be great??
Thanks

You could pull the center layer and run the outer 2. It isn't an arm pulling difference, but it does help. Do you have reed spacers or the cage notch done, that with middle layer removed would be a plus. Maxdlx

I removed 2 layers of my 700 and ran it that way for 2 or 3 seasons wthout any problems. Even when I was not sure about the fuel quality it was still dependable.

only problem i ever had was a leaky gasket once, not sure if i didnt coat it even enough or if the gasket was damaged in some way or something, but i threw new ones in and it was good to go

I've got around 5000 miles on my 98 XTC 700 with the center layer out and the reed notch and all the other goodies listed below. No problems what so ever. Still runs like new.

head gasket

i just did the head mod last night pulled 2 layers used permatex hi tack on the single layer fired er up sounded good no leaks reed notch is next.

Thanks for all of your inputs. I think I will give it a try...

Current setup:
98 700 XTC-P, 1.25 Ripsaw, Bender clutch kit, Reed spacers, Mbrp can, Variflow, & 1 inch riser block.

Nice- Did you like the bender clutch kit? I just ordered one as well. Where did you get the 2' riser from. You can do that without changing the lines correct?

With my budget I have enough to replace the skiis or upgrade to a hacksaw track.. Will be probably getting a pair of USI skiis. The improvement over metal will be large. The current track only has 1600 miles- but it is the crappy yokahama track.

I have a Bender Clutch kit which I needed to modify to get to work.
With the head gasket mod, reed spacers I was overreving and needed some tweeking. Most off the shelf clutch kits get you close but require fine tunning.

PLastic skies are a big upgrade from metal.

When ever I did this mod I had leaks,I tryed different heads thinking I had a warped head and it still leaked. The only way I found to get the leaks to stop is to over torque the head.To be honest and I don't want to offend anyone but this is a poor mans mod.I choose to go with peak heads on my sleds and I have had no issues.

I haven't received the Bender clutch kit yet. Hopefully it will be in today. Once I have it installed I will post what I think about it.
I only put on a 1" spacer (that I made myself out of aluminum) and there was extra slack. I could of easily gone with a 2". but what a difference even the 1" made.
I agree with yamyrider go with the plastic ski upgrade...You won't be dissapointed

marcush...you must be doing something wrong.
You will find hundreds of people that do the gasket mod and it works. If you read it is even a mod you can do after porting to bring back some compression. There are companies that make the thiner gasket for this mod.

Stop using the middle layer

Jayman, the SRX gaskets are different. Can't do it apparently.

Can anybody describe the difference they felt? I just swapped headgaskets because i completely tore the motor down, put new ones in. I had the mod done... but i didn't do it until i put the pipes on, did all the mods at once... now i have no idea how much of a difference each mod made on their own lol! I was thinking about doing it again. But this time i've got different pipes on there, so i'll have to wait til i get clutching dialed in and see where my RPMs go from there... just wondering if it was actually worth it or not. My idea is that it might actually be nice to run regular for once lol.

Headgasket

Ive got the mod done on my 2000 sxr, i noticed that there is more response in the throttle. you will notice a difference when you go to start it. You will feel it crank over a slight bit harder than before. :2strokes:

I did the 3 TY mods, head gasket, hole in can, and reed notch on my '99 600 triple. Hell yea it made a difference! Runs clean and revs quicker. Downside is I fouled a plug for the first time in my life on a Yammie sled. However, it was likely due to old gas and running it in the garage once a week waiting for the snow to come...
