Hey guys, my buddy's sled has an electrical problem we need to get fixed before the season sets off. Last season he came up to the Tug Hill (NY) and we rode about 170 miles. Every time his sled would get up to around 80-90mph or so, it would cut out when he backed off the throttle. But whenever he blipped the throttle while it was cutting out, it would come back. Sounds confusing I know, it only happens at high speeds.
His sled is a Hauck mod, with heads, pipes/cans, porting, etc. Not sure on specifics as I haven't worked on it yet. Any ideas as to what the problem could be? What computer setup (if any) do these sleds have? Thanks,
Travis

did his warning light blink during this cut out? headlights flicker? was it also in sustained stutter bumps or a smooth lake or groomed trail?

It would happen on all trail surfaces, it seemed speed was a bigger factor than bumps. No warning light, the head-lights did flicker because the whole engine shuts off. Scary at night!
Check the wiring harness out real well, and then the stator and other electric parts.
Either it quits generating power, or something robs it. Find an electrically minded buddy, and we can get him the specs.

the reason I asked those questions is usually when the wiring harness gets rubbed thru(a very, very common problem) the headlights and dash lights will flicker on and off thru bumps, the engine will almost sound as if the tors switch is going bad and will instantaneosly quit then run again with no problem.
If it were my sled I would unplug the wiring harness up by hood hinge, tie a string oon it, then flip back all the aluminum straps holding harness to bellypan area as far back as you can reach. Remove the carb rack and airbox. Then pull the harness backwards from by the recoil area, and repair the harness as its most likely rubbed thru and grounding 1 or more wires to the frame of the sled. Wrap each individual wire first, then tape all of them and place the harness in black plastic convolute tubing you get from a autoparts store, pull harness back into place with the string and reattach all the stuff and youll have no more electrical issues.
if its not worn thru it will be before long!! so no matter what youll know its the problem or wont be the problem!

Thanks a lot! I'll check over the harness next time i'm at his place, hopefully that's all it is.

I think Mr. Viper has got it. My 02' did that to me in the Black hills a couple years back. It was the wiring harness that wore though. Same exact symtoms.
