I am the very proud owner of a Viper S (note the S). I am considering purchasing a 2002 SRX, all stock, as a second sled. I am looking for comments from only those that have experience riding both....sorry guys no disrepect to those with insightful opinions. How does the SRX ride in the trails compared to the Viper? Handle the rough stuff...is there enough rear travel? Gas mileage?
Anything else you wish to add about the SRX compared to the Viper then please do so.
Thanks,
Sean

I have a Viper S and my buddie has an 01 SRX. I have rode his SRX and the main difference I feel is the power. The tripple piped SRX stock has at least 20 hp on the stock Viper and it is definitely noticable. My Viper is better in the bumps, now I have an M-10 so obviously it is not in the same league as my stock pro action but the suspension difference was not huge when my sled was stock. The Ohlins in the front of the Viper S Ifeel make a big difference in how capable the Viper S is in bigger bumps compared to the stock SRX front shocks. I don't really consider a VIper S a big bump sled but the SRX is definitly not a big bump sled. The Basically when it got rough on the trails the srx felt it 1st then when it got a little rougher the Viper felt it. SRX's and Vipers handle like slot cars, I feel the SRX is a little flatter in the turns I think mainly due to it's lower ride height. Both me and my buddie got the same gas mileage, around 13-15. My Viper is still a single pipe and the only tripple pipes on a Viper that will get good mileage seem to be if you put SRX pipes on them, witch is not the easiest way to go. SRX's have great top speed too , they make a great lake racer. They are both great sleds,it just depends what you are looking for. I love my Viper but someday if I get the $ for an extra sled I will buy an SRX. Also the 02 SRX has the same DET system the Viper S has to retard timing if detonation is present. This was the only year SRX 's had DET. If you could ride groomed trails most of the time with only small bumps the SRX would be never ending fun. They are very easy to long travel the rear and front suspenions, and if that was not enough you could always put in an X-pert X or an M-10.

Thanks stealth, exactly what I was looking for...a very fair and honest comparision. I am looking at an 2002 SRX with Ohlins shocks. I hear yeah about riding groomed trailed.

do the simple install like im doing with the viper shocks in the rear. and adjustable shock mounts in the ft. It will ride same as viper prety much with more power.I love my srx but did not take bumps to well before when it was stock.

I owned a 1998 SRX and now a 2004 Viper S. They are 2 completely different sleds. The SRX loves flat smooth trails and wide open lakes. Very addicting power from mid to top end. I did not consider it a trail sled however, and I always rode with a kidney belt for supporting my back in the trails. When I purchased the Viper, my intent was to get a true trail sled that was capable of handling rough trails, but it is no lake racer without pipes.
Oh, and I don't need the kidney belt anymore!

I own an 02 SRX and I've rode a 04 Viper S, I didn't much care for the Viper but then again I only rode the Viper 2 or 3 times because my buddy couldn't get enough of my SRX. The viper was more bump friendly but it felt abit more tippy in the corners then my SRX. They are both awesome sleds and in my mind they are the same when you do the pro's and con's.
