What Year Yamaha's Were Equipped With Smart Carbs And What Models Had Them? The Other Thing I Am Wondering Is, How Do You Tell If Your Machine Has Smart Carbs? What Is The Difference Between These And Regular Carbs?

Come On Guys....someone Has To Know More About These Carbs Than Myself. From What I Know, Mine Appears To Have Regular Carbs But I Dont Know The Difference From Smart Carbs. What Is It These Smart Carbs Supposedly Do? ;)!

What sled are these "Smart Carbs" on? I don't think they were available in '96

Mine has the TM38's (flat slide) on it. There is no coolant circuit. There is a TPS (throttle position switch) and the TORS.

My Father's '02 Viper had 3 TM33's on it. They have the same TPS and TORS.

The Carburetor book I have from Aaen vesion 2002 has info for the VM, TM and TMX series Mikuni's.

Got a picture?

I have a pic of the TM38's on my workbench,

that is the same carb setup as mine. i was pretty sure they werent smart carbs but was wondering what they were thats all. thanks for the help. ;)!

the smart carbs worked on the same principle as Holtzman's Tempaflow to lean out the engine, so look at the carb vents. I think they might have been offered on a few other sleds besides the MM. but I think they were limited to 600 twins.

I've only seen them on the 600 twins, my moms 96 Venture Had them on it and they were junk! Hard to start, either ran too rich or too lean, blew the motor once. The sled had a big sticker on it that said Smart Carb with a red logo behind it or back ground.

Not sure how far back, but I have seen them on the pogo stick machines.
Only on the twin cylinder engine. MMax and Venture.
I believe 99 was the last year.
Compensates for Temperature and elevation.
On a 98 MM600, the carbs are Mikuni TM36.

As for actual differences, I'm not sure. There are a few sensors under the hood, but once they are disconnected, the carbs maybe the same as std carbs.
