Question, what is different and unique about the 1996 Vmax XT? I notice that the 96 XT has quite a few different parts from the previous years Vmax and the 1997 +. Does anyone have a brochure or magazine review.
What is the rear suspension called is it a "Pro Action"?
Any info appreciated (I have read almost every TY post on this sled)
I am currently doing the following mods have parts and have started on head mod, plastic skis (plus ski savers and shims), boysen reeds, tempa flow, clutch and I am sure I will be looking for a inexpensive skid after I get my body beaten on the trails down here in lower SW Michigan. I am a former MXer and when borowing somebody elses sled, ride em pretty much the same as the race bikes. Thats why I had to buy one, buddies got tired of me tearing their sleds up - me too - I live by the rule "you break it, you bought it" so it will probably be cheaper to own my own.
Next year (Summer) will be looking for a good ditch banger, the XT is not that!

The rear is the first year for the Pro-Action Plus and is a very plush trail ride but, the whole sled is not a ditch banger (heavy) if that's what you are looking for it's more of a sit back and ride sled ? The front was the first year for the adjustable preload on a 5/600 with the T.S.S. The thinner head gasket is a must and the 96 600 used the same better preforming pipe that Yamaha offered as a G.Y.T. pipe for the 1994-95 models ! B.T.W. Plastic skis are a big improvement with all the T.S.S. sleds

I'll add this. You can forgo the reed upgrade. It is not a cost effective upgrade. The stockers breath fine as long as they are in good shape.

I bought a new 96XT in 96. Great running sled, real quick, nice ride, sucked gas like mad. Enjoy!

Yep, me too!!! It was my first new sled, and got to put the first 80 miles on it on October 28, 1995 in Grayling(Blue Bear trail)profyamaha said:I bought a new 96XT in 96. Great running sled, real quick, nice ride, sucked gas like mad. Enjoy!![]()

you can set up the proaction plus with 2" of set in and you should be fine, if you still bottom it semi easily go tighter on the suspension.
SXR700Bandit- what do you mean set up with 2" of set in??
Set in - is where you lift the rear end of the sled slightly off of the ground and gently place it back onto the ground and measure the distance from the ground to the rear grab bar(measure vertically), write this measurement down, and then sit on the seat backwards(so you can measure) to see how much the suspension compressed with your weight. Then adjust the spring on the rear shock tighter if necessary. Remember that by doing this the ride WILL get stiffer and won't be as plush as a cadillac, but it shouldn't bottom it as easy asit did before.Coles_55 said:SXR700Bandit- what do you mean set up with 2" of set in??
BEFORE YOU ADJUST ANYTHING.....look at the distances and measure where the shock settings are set before you adjust them just so you can come back to that point incase you don't like the results after any adjustments. It was mentioned to me that I would want to adjust the front shock half of the distance that the rear one moves, go alittle more if you want less ski pressure and more weight transfer.
FOR ANYONE ELSE following -
Just as a thought, I think that my sled sank 6" when I sat on it, so I adjusted it stiffer to eliminate bottoming, you can go with more set in than 2" if you choose to, thats up to your preference. I also set up my '00 Sxr this way. Good Luck. T
