Just bought a 94 vmax 600. There is oil everywhere under the hood and I can't figure out the source. Anywhere in particular I should start looking? One side note, the throttle cable has about .5 inches of free play at the handlebar. Does this affect the oil pump? Seems like way to much free play. Any other issues with these sleds I should watch for or check out? This is my first yammy and I need to get up to speed quick before the snow flies!

Maybe the oil line came off?
Is the oil splattered up under the hood or just lying in the bellypan?
Be sure to find out where the oil is coming from b4 you run it. You will squeek it.
Did you do any service to the motor, or the carbs that could have pulled the oil line?
Any oil running down the front under the pipes? My wifes sled is a 94 vmax6 and the y pipe is leaking pretty bad. I have new gaskets ready to install.
I would first start with the oil line and then the y pipe.

Thanks for the reply. There is some oil leaking from the Y pipe that I noticed. I didn't think it would leak that much though. I haven't touched it except to run it a few minutes before buying. Does your vmax spread the oil from the Y pipe around or is it confined to just below the leak? Any advice on the throttle cable slop?

First look over the oil lines and all the connections. There could be a cracked or chafed line or loose connection at a fitting. If you do not find anything, thoroughly clean everything under the hood - which is not an easy task - a pressure washer is probably the easiest way. When everything is clean and dry and the sled is used, the point of leakage should show.

The throttle should not have that much play. I think that 1 millimeter is the spec.

Thanks for the advice. I checked and the oil lines nor the pump are leaking. It looks like it is coming from the y pipe and was maybe pooled in there after sitting. It still seams like a lot of oil but it is all I can see that is leaking.

Check your oil cable adjustment. Follow the cable down to where it goes in to the bracket. If there is oil and grease all over the oil cable linkage, clean it off with carb cleaner. There is a little line on the linkage(the moveable part), and it should line up with the mark on the stationary part where the cable goes through. Just check it with the engine off, and hold the throttle wide open and see if they line up. I run mine just a bit toward the front of the line. If it needs to be adjusted, you can either undo the 2 rubber covers on the cable and loosen the jam nut and adjust until it is right then retighten the jam nut, or for a quicker adjustment just lean on the bracket with the heel of your hand and bend the bracket 1 way or the other to achieve the desired setting with the throttle at Wide open. Maybe it is out of adjustment and just flooding the engine with too much oil and what doesn't get burned is leaking out the exhaust. Good luck!

ya those 600 are nortorius for blow by oil out the y pipe, there was an update on the gasket for those also.So if you have a bad leak ..it will ressemble an abortion down there!

ours leak out of the y-pipe all the time , those sleds actually have a replacement donut type of thing, which is meant to wear out so you do not wear out the metal and have to replace your entire pipe. that exhaust donut usually sells for around $20.

I have oil running down the front of my engine also and I replaced the gaskets. I am suspecting a bad oil pump. When the oil pump goes it is constantly pumping as if you were wide open throttle.
