I have a buddy (AKViper) who is thinking of going from his 144 to a 151. I'm looking for other input for him to read along with the info i've already gave him. I told him he is going to have to do a tunnel extention, does any one make one that kicks up? I also told him he is going to have to do a rail extention and new track. Is he going to have to change his gearing with the longer track? If so what gears do you recomend? Who makes the best replacement? I've heard of Holtz? and MPI, are their any other ones out their besides those two that you would recomend?
Thanks for the extra info,
Tom

Hartman tunnel kicks up a little see photo below, click on photo to enlarge.
I love my set up. If AKViper does the 151, while its apart put on anti-ratchet drivers. Only $160, Hyfax lasts 2-3 times longer and more HP to the snow (ie loose track ='s less friction). If he has 9 tooth and goes to 8 tooth which you have to with anti-ratchet drivers, it gears you down a little anyway.

I planned on having him pick up anti-ratchet drivers because your right, if its down that far anyway you might as well change them out. The real question that I have about the whole thing is what track to go with. Does the hartmans kits have any weight reduction to it?

Did a Hartman kit last year on a friends Mountain Viper. Anti-ratchet drivers (stuck with the factory 8 tooth size) and no gear reduction as of yet. I don't know if there is any weight reduction, probably not. Hartman was a few $'s cheaper than the others.
How did your friend like the 151" over the 144"?

No weight loss, longer tunnel, longer track and adding rail extenders adds a little. Which track depends on where and how you like to ride. I'm assuming in the powder a lot, but are there hard packed trails also. Most web sites for tracks give a pretty good discription of what the different tracks do best.

Loves it. As soon as I get a longer trailer, mine will grow a little too.

Couple vipers I ride with have went from 144 to 151 without a tunnel extension. The flap doesn't seem to get sucked up in the tunnel either. On one of them, the guy ty-wrapped the lower part of the bumper to the flap, so it couldn't flex under enought to get caught by the track. They look good too. If it were me, I'd do rail extensions and a track, then see if the tunnel extension is needed (which it's not!). By the way, Hartman is the man when it comes to yamaha mountain sleds.

Here is a 156x16x2-1/2 on a 151 tunnel. Looks good and
the flap does not get sucked in. The biggest problem to worry about
is the rear exchanger and temp problems. With the extension, it
get moves back also. Your only talking 3.5" though.

I can't see the Picture but I was thinking about doing a 156 on my RX-1M with a kick up 151 extention, do you think that will work?

We have to do some slight trail riding to get to the powder but the powder we ride in has almost no bottom, probably about waist deep and I can get around pretty good on my 151 but I'm looking for something just a little better.

Not sure about the exchanger configuration on an RX but I'll bet it will.
Again, we're only talking about 2.5" longer with those tracks.

After re-reading your post, your sled is a 98? This is based from the 2000 plus
MM/Viper mounting points, I think you'll have to move your front mount back.

My buddy Phil is wanting to extend is 06 Mountain Viper to a 151, My 98 MSRX may or may not go to a 144 it all depends on what the wife wants because it's her sled and my 05 RX-1 might go to a 156 but I'm going to wait on that and see how it does once I loose some weight and see if it's any better.
