Hello,
I got a 1983 SRV 540. I have had nothing but trouble with the engine ever since I got it.
Last december I put a new top end in it - got about 500 miles out of it.
went and started it up one very cold morning (-40 degrees Celsius) seized up (mild siezure) within 30 secs while warming up. put oil down the plug holes, let sit a hour, rotated the clutch back and fourth, she broke loose and I rode another 100 miles. Then she siezed up bad while on a lake run.
this time I took the motor out, put in new crank, punched it out .060 and new wiseco pistons - the whole nine yards. made it about 200 miles and it has now seized up solid a third time.
I'm thinkin the oil pump ain't putting enough out. Now i'm totally redoing the engine again - is there something else causing siezure besides lack of oil? - the seems to pump out oil cause she smokes blue and the level goes down in the tank after a ride. the pump is adjusted to spec.
Or toss the pump and go Premix? What should I mix - 50:1 ok?
anyone had probs like this with SRV's before?
Thanks,
Russ

I second the OEM parts.
Look at everything carefully crank bearings, rod bearings, seals, carb boots, oil pump, jetting, make sure before you go on long rides check the pipston wash and make sure she is not running lean.

Whats your jetting on it #150MJ and #92 SJ?????? running a pipe?? I run my 89 srv with premix, and have had the same wiseco .040 piston in since 1998 with zero problems, the key to wiseco's is warm up time. I leyt mine warm up at least 15 minutes.....dont believe the hype!!!!!! wiseco makes a great product! I also like OEM as well, just 2 different pistons that need differnt handling. if your looking for some good help on your SRV, head on over to my SRV540 forum http://srv540.proboards80.com/index.cgi? glad to help you out anyway I can. The SRV is a very reliable fan mill, right there with the phazer...check for air leaks as well in all the usual places!

did you check the crank seals? If one of those is leaking it will lean down and burn it up everytime.

way to pimp the site sacha!
I'll agree with that as well, wiseco is awesome, just let them warm up properly. But can't say anything bad about the OEM. I would go with OEM just because of the warm up time.

My "84 srv has wisecos. Ive owned it for about 6 years. Two years ago I had a fan bearing failure that caused me to have to recover the sled in the field. The pto side piston was a little scuffed. I tore it down pulled the rings out of the pistons, cleaned the pistons and rings and reassembled it. My fan housing now says it is a 480 but, It is still the same 540. Runs as good as new.
If it had stock pistons it would have been a complete rebuild.

I have used Wiseco pistons in the past on my 83 SRV as well as other machines and have had nothing but problems with them. Run OEM pistons and have a reliable machine.

dont know if it helps but my buddy had a RMK 800 that did the same thing. it would just lock up on the trail and we would have to sit there and rock the clutch back and forth to free it. his turned out to be the crank bearings were locking up.
