Hey guys I know this is simple for many of you but this is my first time doing it and I don't want to screw up.
Secondary clutch
I pull the secondary clutch on my 99 sx 600 yesterday to install a new helix, spring and shims. My question is where does this shims go, also I realize the plastic where the helix run are a little wear can I replace this, if yes how....? And the last question for the seconbdary is that when it was on the machine it had a little play that is normal right....
Primary Clutch
On this one I'm putting weights and spring, altought I don't have a clutch puller but I could get one, or should I / can I do it on the sled. Let me know which one is the best and easy way to do it.....or shoukd I say the right way.
The last question is that I want to clean the clutches but I don't know how....y read some emery cloth in circle motion.....
Thanks in advance for all responses....
Nick

Your first question, about the shims in the secondary, i can't answer. I've never known of anyone putting shims behind the secondary spring, only the primary spring to put a little more preload on the spring to get a little higher engagment. I dont know how you would put them behind the secondary spring (if that's where they are intended for) because the spring ends need to fit in the indexing holes on the clutch and on the helix. As for the worn out black plastic sliders, yes they are a wear item and can be replaced, just go get three new ones from your yamaha dealer and you will easily see how they are replaced, they just pull right out, very simple. And yes the secondary clutch has some side to side play on the jackshaft from the factory, they call this a floating secondary, and the idea is that the secondary will automatically align itself with the primary for perfect offset. It is a good idea to check your center to center and deflection while you are working on the clutches.
As for the primary, yes you can change the springs and helix with the clutch still on the sled, but i think most will agree that it is easier to do with it sitting on the bench where you can get at everything easily, and can get some good pressure on the primary cover in order to get the bolts started when you are putting it back together. Chances are you will need a puller at some point down the road anyway, so you might as well just get one now. My puller is an Erlandson or EPI, my dealer had it and i like it a lot. When reinstalling the clutch after you are done changing the spring and weights, torque the bolt to 80 ft-lbs, back it off, then retorque to 60 ft-lbs.
As for cleaning the clutches, for the secondary do it when its apart. First rough up the sheaves good with some 220 grit or so sandpaper or even just a scotch brite pad. Then wash the entire clutch with some HOT, soapy water, NO OTHER CHEMICALS. Then blowdry them with compressed air. Same thing with the primary, rough up the sheaves to get rid of the glazed layer, wash it good with hot soapy water and dry with compressed air. Also, clean the belt in the same way, new or old, to remove belt dust, oil, and mold spores from new belts.
Hope that helps!!!
Thanks for the fast reply and all the info..... The shims might be for the primary.....Like I say I'm pretty new with this....

Shims are for the lengthening the primary spring to raise engagement.

Now if the shims are for the primary that definately makes sense. You just install them in the spring pocket in the primary cover before you put the spring in, and it is an effective way of raising your engagement some, usually about 100 rpm per shim. Don't use more than three shims though or you will get coil binding.
Great I'm doing two shims......How do I check the center to center and deflection......?

Yamaholic you said to install the shims in the pocket of the primary cover. Does it matter if the shims are installed in the pocket on the spider? It seems this would be easier, I just wonder if there is a difference?

No difference, you can install them in either the spider or the pocket, will have the same effect. Do whatever you find to be the easiest.
they do have shims to adjust the belt def. on the secondary...is that what you mean?Nicko said:Thanks for the fast reply and all the info..... The shims might be for the primary.....Like I say I'm pretty new with this....
