We have a 96 600xt that the previous owner pretty much ran on the right cylinder for a while because of a malfunctioning carb (who knows how long). The right cylinder was showing about 10 p.s.i. (115 and 105) less than the left so we decided to tear it down and check it out. We had planned to replace the rings, and maybe the piston. In doing so we found a small pit on the wall and are now trying to decided if something should be done about it, or if we should just do the ring job and put it back together. Other than the one small pit above the exhaust port (picture below) the walls are in good shape. Any thoughts?

I would... that much out your rings aren't going to be doing the best job they can. I would replace it if you were going to do the job yourself. I woudlnt' pay a dealer that is for sure! How many miles it have? I would say if your going to tear down the engine more and pull teh pistons do yourself a favor and do it right the first time!
It has about 3000. I was hoping to get away with not doing it only because I already seem to have invested more money in this 11 year old sled than it is is worth. The sled was bought (on ebay) under the assumption it was "well maintained", but it turned out that its been very neglected. Been replacing parts left and right....I guess that's part of snowmobiling though.

I consider a pit the size of a pen point that looks like a dimple or a groove.I would clean it up and post more pictures but lean on the side of a replate job.
id just get a good used cylinder. You can sell that one. People will buy them to replate or buy them for cores

That is a good idea as they are on ebay from time to time.These are really expensive to buy new as the reed holder is part of the cylinder.I think somewhere between 6-700 canadian.
I see alot more then 1 pit in there, yes, it needs replated!! Running it will allow the piston rings to eat at the plating, chipping it off and then the plating will eat your crank bearings alive, so it would be alot cheaper to fix the sled correctly then to run it and really spend some money on it when the crank bearings will go bad and the cylinder and piston will still need replaced!
Thanks for the insight everyone, My dad (who's now retired and gets to spend all day playing with the sleds in his garage...free mechanic for me
) got the rest tore down and It looks like it is going to get new rings, a piston, and a replacement or replated jug (whichever is cheaper).

how does the head look? Be sure to check for chunks or debri in the crank case.
Be a good idea mike the other piston to see if in specs. Might as well re-ring them both. Looks like a fun easy project. Let us know how it runs when you get it back together
