Thinking about purchasing a sled from out of state. Does anyone know if you have to pay sales tax in MN if you buy the sled out of state? The sled is registered in MI by the way.
I should also note that the seller in Michigan is a private party.

You do have to pay tax when you register the sled. According to the state of Mi the tax is paid on the value of the sled. You can try to have the bill of sale written for a lesser amount than what you paid but if you go too low the state will look up book value and charge you based on that.
Seeing as though the tax was paid in Michigan when the sled was purchased new, I just need to know if I will have to pay Minnesota sales tax when I bring it back here and register it.
Sorry, didn't read that right, thought you were bringing it from MN to MI. I bought a sled titled in Mi and kept the registration in Mi - tranfered the registration. I still had to pay tax, but that was in Mi.
Thanks anyhow. Someone might know, just a matter of the right person reading this post.
michigan doesn't go off the value of the sled. Just have the seller write up a bill of sale for alot less than you paid for it but make it reasonable. maybe something like this.
This sled was sold for $500 with a bad motor. No warranty is given or prescribed.

Hmm, that too is an idea
pisses me off still today.
Taxes were paid on the sled when it was brand new. now ya got to pay them again. Same goes for cars, trucks, trailers ETC
its just a good way for the state gov't to stoke you in the rear again when you buy a used sled or vehicle.

In iowa you don't pay tax on a used sled purchase. I bought mine from Mn and paid no tax to register it in Iowa. Maxdlx

I'm glad I read this, every time some state senator proposes a sales tax in Montana the hair stands up on my neck. We have property and income taxes but no Sales yet and that is good! It does seem like they can't tax one enough.
From the Minnesota DNR who returned my call today. No sales tax is to be paid in Minnesota if purchased from a private party, no matter the state. If bought at a dealership out of state, the owner must pay MN sales tax if he/she hasn't already paid tax in the state it was purchased. Thanks for the help guys!

Well we did just get 3 ft of mountain snow... Haha.. I'll give ya that. Is there anywhere to ride in the ol miss'?
Ha Ha no. I just transferred from whidbey island Wa. i am in the navy and was stationed up there. had a blast. I went up to mt baker all the time and did the snow and grass drags. my sleds were towed back to michigan when i had to leave. Im going up to micigigan next month to ride for a few weeks. Trust me, The Wa state Gov't is far better than the mississippi Gov't.
