Thinking of installing reverse on my 04 Viper S. I heard they don't last, cause problems and wear out. I am not at all famillier with doing this. Is this a reliable and safe thing to do? Will performance suffer at all? I have a small gerage and with two sleds it's impossible to turn them around in there.

Viper I just bought has reverse on it. Machine has 7000km and seems to have worked fine for the previous owner. I don't have any km on it yet personally (no snow), but everything seems to check out ok.

Mine is factory installed aswell...and I love it...some say it slows things down a bit...unsure...but just unloading from the truck is well worth it...What
I don't do on the lake runs..I make up for in the twisties...
Unsure if custom install changes things...I wouldn't think so...just take
yer time...and follow the instructions...good luck

I put Reverse on my 03 Viper and it was money well spent .
Not hard to install , and no loss in performance . And I don't
have to tug and haul on it to turn around any more .
SS.

Added reverse

I just did a install on my 03 viper with 16,000km's and it went well. I had a dealer kit with no instructions and downloaded it from the tech section. simple job. Only missing three bolts...A tip-remove the magnet at the end of you dipstick and throw it out, lost two in the gear set over the years. I flush everything out each season with the cover off and inspect things out and adjust chain before install cover, can't go wrong...And when I go on a long trip I do the same prep...Good luck...If you need any help just p.m. me and I? will talk you through it, I think I took some pics as I went...

I put reverse in my Viper last season and it was the best thing I ever did. No more trting to pull it out of the trailer and tight spots. Yamaha reverse is well engineered. If you change the chain lube when supposed to and keep everything in check, just like you would for a sled without reverse you will not have issues. All the new Yammie 4 strokes have the same reverse system too. IMO it's worth it. Plus it's fun when you ride with your buddies that don't have reverse and you get to back out of the spot you were in and they got blocked in the front and have to pull the thing out. That usually earned me a middle finger when my back up beeper came on.

I have 29,000km on my 02 viper er . Not one problem with the reverse but the electric start ring gear striped off the primary clutch and had to be taken off . I don't miss that but the reverse I coundn't live without , Good Luck ..... :winterrul

Thanks for all the feedback, This forum is the best. I called the dealer to order the kit. Looking forward to having reverse. It should be a real back saver. I hope it's not too pricy. I didn't even ask for a price. The snow is hear and there is more coming. I'll be taking the Viper out for the first time on sunday. :letitsnow

reverse break-in

Go slow at first and come to a complete stop and hold the brake before shifting into reverse...after a full tank of fuel, change the chaincase oil out...and your good to go...remember run the chain a little loose at first, then adjust after the oil change... :letitsnow

I have been running a reverse kit off of an vmax deluxe on my 00 srx. I have had zero issues and I ride it hard!!! I did take out the clutch kit cause it engaged just too hard and I was concerned about the smaller chain of the vmax reverse not holding up. SO far no problems. Probably 2000 miles on it. I also have a reverse on my pipe vmax and no issues either. Just make sure you take up the slack in the system before you jam it. I always ease into the throttle any time I change directions to make sure the system is fully engaged. I change the oil at least every other year.
