Finally got to "test flight" the Exciter yesterday. It was great, except, no brakes!
Pads looked worn out so I got a new set.
I installed a new pad on the moving caliper side. The one on the "fixed" chaincase side seemed to have a little life yet to go so I left it on. I go for a test ride and still no brakes?! Next I adust the cable on top of the caliper by loosening the lock nut and adjusting until the brake handle got harder to pull. Handle now takes a lot of strength to pull to get a little braking. What am I missing???
Also, how does one replace the "fixed" brake puck that is held on the chaincase side? The brake disc blocks removal. Do I have to remove the chaincase???
Thank you,
Tom

You have to remove the brake caliper to change the "fixed" pad. Pad limit is .37"
Adjust ments are as followed.
The distance from the bottom of the bracket that holds the cable sheeth to the center of the end of the cable, the metal thing on the cable that hooks into the caliper. IS 2.24"
Pad to rotor clearance is .006~.012"
if it is not here is how to set it.
1: loosen the lock nut adn adjuster. This is the bolt that goes into the cliper from the inside, it is a pain to get to.
2: insert a .006 feeler gauge between the brake pad and disc.
3:turn adjuster untill it is seated lightly
4:tighten lock nut
5: remove feeler gauge and recheckpad clearence, repeat till you get it.
Brake freeplay at the handalbar lever should be .24`.28"
I hope this helps, if you need more let me know. That was taken right out of the Yamaha Factory Man

Not quite understanding.
First, the "fixed" pad on the chaincase side. Once I remove the caliper, how to I move the brake rotor to get at that pad? Do I have to move/remove the chaincase to get the needed clearence?
As for the adjustment, this is one of Yamaha's self adjusting brakes, the cable ratchets the other pads forward as it wears. Do I still need the adjustment you mentioned?
Are there pictures anywhere?
Thank you,
Tom

Your problem is likely the disk has siezed up on the jackshaft and will not press against the inner pad causing the wear on the caliper pad only and haveing poor brakes.Remove chaincase and rotor grease the jackshaft so it slides and reinstall.

I can partially answer my own question now. To replace the fixed brake pad that sets in the backside of the chaincase and between the rotor: One must remove the chaincase to get this pad replaced!
Now the brake system is "locked-up." Either the rotor needs a little play and is rusted on the jackshaft or there is an adjustment I don't know about!
Dealership, here I come! Winter is too short for this kind of aggrevation!
