I've head that the only way a crank failure shows up in the 98 SRX's is only by reducing the power the engine puts out!?!?
Is this true? Wouldn't I notice some kind of vibration or idle problems?
What, if any, engine problems would a spun crank cause?
Has anybody out there experienced this?
(I am going to try to call my dealer tomorrow to check to see if this one has been welded...)
Thanks!

I think most people noticed a vibration in the bars as well as reduced power. Most of the sleds that had problems where within the first 1000 miles or so. Also, most have been fixed under a recall program. Not all though. I was one of the unlucky ones that purchased a used 98 SRX and the crank was never done. I have never had any problems though.

Well, I just bought this sled this past summer and have just ridden it this past weekend....I'm not sure I would notice a vibration since Im not familiar with the 'normal' feel of this sled...
I am comparing it to my 800 MXZ and it is really quite a dog!
I thought these things were supposed to have a lot of power!
I have yet to completely dial in the clutches but @ 8100 I could only top out at 130-140km/hr...
hmmm....its sounding bad...im going to call yamaha today to check with them about the crank.
Thanks again!

My 98 srx 600 is a great sled. I'm sorry about the problems you are having with your SRX but, when you finally tune that sucker in, you will want to ride that baby all day!!
Thoughs SRX's have amazing power that anyone would want! I wish you the best of luck...So have you giving your sled a compression test yet? Check with turk about clutch settings, he knows his poop...lol

A dial indicator on the clutch fixed sheave will show out of round if the crank has a problem.Thats the top edge.Does not rob alot of power or vibrate to a great extent. But i am shure there is the exception.Stuck power valves are the most commen power rober.

Personally if i wanted to be sure about crank runout i would measure it on the crank itself, not on the edge of the fixed sheave, may not be perfectly round, its just one more source of error in the measurement.

hmm...I will have to get my hands on a dial indicator to check...thanks for the tip!
I turned down the idle to <900 and observed the servo pull back all the powervalves correctly last night...then pulled off the pipes and checked the adjustment of one of them to ensure it was in fact pulled back flush (I didnt bother taking the exhaust manifolds off the other 2 since they've all been cleaned 2 months ago and Im sure the adjustment is darn close to the one I checked).
My plan is the following:
-Buy a stand so that I can spin the engine above 6500rpm to observe the servo pulling them out under load.
&
-Fix my clutching so that I raise the upper end from 8100 to 8400 where it should be.
I tested my compression with a REALLY cheap gague and all 3 cylinders read 100psi cold (very low!)
I ran over to my '03MXZ800 with 8700km on its rings and it measured about the same. I am going to run over to a friends place soon to see what numbers this gague is really reading by comparing gague readings...but the MXZ will do 160km/h ... so WHY WONT THE SRX!??!!?
anyway...the search continues...
