fuel gage not working

a friend of mine has an 01 sxr 700 with fuel gage problems.....he says he put 12v power source to gage and it moves.....float inside tank moves he says...what else could be wrong?

Check the grounds and check for wires that might have rubbed through. You can also check the resistance through the sending unit; probe the sending unit connector with an ohm-meter while changing the position of the float to make sure the sending unit is working.

ok, back at er again, I put an OHMS meter on the wires going to the gauge and i have power going to both i checked the sending unit and the meter did not move at all when i moved it up and down.... Do Ya's think that this is the problem.?
