friend has a 03 mtn viper with 7500 km. going over it last night performing reg pre season checks and saw some small (3-4mm) cracks on the very lowest points on his primary.(both fixed and sliding sheaves)Are they all like it? every yamaha triple with the 8dn belt i have seen ,all have these small cracks!! my 99 srx is also like it so i bought a used viper primary with 700 miles on it. it to has some small inperfections. my local yamaha mechanic told me to replace it -but i think they all go like it even with min. use. can some of you guys have a look and tell me what your sheaves are like?

ya, its common, they are heat cracks, the "other" sled brands get them as well, the belts are very hard now a days, a 8dn belt gets hot and stays hot. add some clutch slippage and you get the cracks, as long as they are not big, just keep an eye on them. You can clean the faces up with scotch brite pads and sometimes alot of it will be cleaned up real well. keeping good clean clutch faces and good non worn belt on it gos along ways.

Cracks

My SRX has them too. Does Yamaha sell complete clutches ofr do we have to piece them. And if we do do we need to have the new parts balanced?>

Ya do wee need them balanced? My local dealer said that they come balanced from the factory but I dont know, will have to look for balancing marks.

yes new ones come balanced, and in truth if you replace sheaves or spider, etc, you should get the clutch dynamically balanced again.
