My buddy has the 98 xtc .. Well a 1 1/2 yrs ago, he let a buddy ride his sled.. went riding... Water pump started leaking.. well the impeller nut backed out (what a mess.. ) Chewed the impeller, and water pump cover.. All went well & basically trouble free (besides the carb heater line blowing out of the WP cover... got one with no pre drill.. ) but anyways that prob was fixed.
Well went to start the sleds sunday.. shut it down.. guess what ... weeping out that darn weep hole again (after only about 1500 miles). Took it apart, has rust particles under the impeller, the mechanical seal was torn apart and a little rust on the WP shaft.
I have a couple questions...
1. Is there supposed to be any play in the shaft (Like pulling up and down, it has just a teeny tiny bit of play and I mean tiny)
2. If there is any play in the shaft is it possible that it is taking out the mechanical seal (Maybe highspeed wobble from the shaft) .. I mean the motor sounds good and tight minus this problem.
3. To take the shaft out do we have to split the cases apart, or can we remove the C clip and pull and the outter bearing and the whole shaft will come out??
I dunno maybe it was just a bad seal.. Maybe he pinched it putting it in ... I know there are allot of veriables that could have happened. I am just glad that this didn't have 30-40 miles into the woods or possibly launching the motor.
But anyhow ... I appreciate any info you hardcore Yamaha techies can provide to me ..
Thanks
