Alright guys I am having some issues with my SRX 700 which I love. So heres the deal. The sled ran good at home took it up north for the first real ride of the year. She ran pretty good for a while. But then the bottom dropped out. I shut the sled down for a quick break and it insisted on dying every three feet. When this happened the temp light would blink three times and thats all same as when i start the sled. Now the sled has a high end miss and by the end of the trip it felt like it was running on one cylinder. never had such a frustrating weekend in my life. thing is the sled ran funny but cleaned up for about an hour on saturday ran great perfect as a matter of fact. HELP HELP PLEASE!!!!

when it cuts out is the headlight light flickering before that??? does it cut out, come back on and flutter the engine kinda like a fouled spark plug?
Also does the tach seem to be working correctly? what happens if you switch the headlight onto highbeam and try and ride the sled?

yeah
Yeah those are the exact symptoms. runs real rough on the top most of the time, sometimes rare though it runs great. Plus when you start it if you blip the throttle the temp light flashes three times sometimes it dies will fire right back up.

ya, you gotta good ol classic case of a chaffed wiring harness.
1.) remove airbox and carbs.
2.)unhook wiring up at the hood hinge, tie a peice of sturdy string onto the harness.
3.) down in front of motor you will notice small alum clamps bent over the harness, bend these up and release the wiring harness, now go over to the recoil of the sled on the engine and pull the wiring harness up and out towards the handlebars, you will find the wires have rubbed thru the sheathing and are grounding out on the frame of the sled.
4.) tape each wire individually then tape all of them in 1 harneess again, now place that harness in black plastic convolute tubing, you can get it at any auto parts store, pull the harness back thru and reaatch all clamps and reinstall the carbs and airbox, your done and it will never happen again with the convolute tubing installed !
take these 4 steps and call me in the morning!!!!....LOL!!!

sooooooo
So I pulled all the wiring out from under the motor and there is no sign of any of the wires having wear. none of the wires are worn through the plastic coating. you think that just having the tape rubbed off would be enough to create that much havoc. or should i be looking somewhere else. PLEASE HELP

i had the same problem except the wires were rubbed through near the cdi box. on the left side of the sled take the grill panel screws out and just fold it back a bit. the cdi is just above the foot stirrup. the wires come down from the plugs and run along the aluminum from the stirrup towards the tunnel then up the side of the tunnel into the engine bay. mine were rubbed through where they sat on the aluminum. i just taped them all up put some padding in there to prtect them and she ran perfect after that. this was on a 98 srx.

If your symptoms are exactly has Mr. Viper has described you definitely have some wires rubbed through somewhere. Keep looking, you'll find them. Is the SRX a 2000?
You are aware of how the engine runs if you activate the TORS?.
It probably ain`t your problem but I just wanted to be sure that you are aware of te system.

My buddy's srx was doing the same thing, he checked the wiring harness and nothing was worn under the engine, finally found the worn wires were underneath the handlebar pad.

how are you guys starting you're slaeda are you not touching the throttle until she's warm? start it at full choke and immediately go to half if it wont stay running go back to full for a sec. you are tryin g to get to no choke as fast as you can. then reach down under your floorboards and when the heat exchanger is warm to the touch then you can hit the throttle. it's so easy to flood theese. and once flooded they dont really like to fix themselves.
