Getting the sled ready for the season and noticed the exhaust manifold has began to lose its paint and rust. I have removed the manifold from the sled and have bead blasted it in preparation for re-painting. My question is what kind of paint do you guys reccomend for this that will hold up to the heat it will see?? I was thinking of using automotive high temp ceramic header / exhaust paint, anyone have any thoughts on this?? Thanks in advance -Ed

I am using the high temp 1600 degree header paint on my pipes. I haven't ran them yet but they are all painted. Make sure your bead blasting guy is nice otherwise he will go through the pipes in spots where they are thin. They will have to be welded if he does. I have used this paint on brake rotors on cars and brake calipers. According to the label you are supposed to "fire" the coating for a few hours at 400 degrees. I did this with the brake rotors after sandblasting and they have yet to lose their coating. One thing I did notice is that even after the paint has dried it still flows to some degree. Don't lay the painted parts on a rag otherwise at the very least the rag texture gets imprinted on your part or worst case the rag becomes part of the coating. I have had this happen a couple of times.

Thanks for the quick reply, I was just curious as to how you are planning on "firing" your pipes at 400* for a few hours as I will need to do this as well. As for the bead blasting, I did it myself. It was blasted last night and is waiting to be painted later tonight. It had just began to lose the original paint and only had light surface rust. Just wanted to get it fixed before it did rust through or get thin. I will be on my way to the auto parts store from work to pick up a can of paint. -Ed

"FIRE" up your sled after you put the pipes back on. Just be gentle when reinstalling the pipes as this stuff will rub off until it is "FIRED".

Well I used an old BBQ for the brake rotors. It discolored them I didn't care on the brake rotors but I wouldn't reccomend it on something you will see. Go to a powder coat shop close they might do it for you for cheap. I plan on "Firing" up the sled method for my pipes.

Make sure you use something with a rating higher than 1200 degrees Fahrenheit or you will be doing this again next year, need at least 1500 degree paint.
