I'm looking to upgrade the rear suspension on my 2000 SRX with about 2900 miles on it. Any suggestions on what it will take to make the upgrade in a reasonably costt-effective way?

Most cost effective way would be to find some Viper Take off shocks. If you are a trail cruiser look to get the updated revalved ones. If aggressive is more your style look to the non revalved ones.

i did exaclty above on my 2000 srx
you will need to extend the bottom of the transfer rods for the higher ride height/longer travel.
i set the fra ( front/rear ) to the softest setting on original viper shocks and it handles/rides great.
